What's stuntman Sonny Hooper's reaction when he learns the record for a fall is 223 feet? "I'll go 224," he says. Burt Reynolds plays Hooper and Sally Field plays his girlfriend. The new stunt team member (Jan-Michael Vincent) prods him to try a risky rocket car leap. Sonny intends to have the last laugh.
The film's a natural for Reynolds, who broke into movies doing stunts, and for director Hall Needham. "We created stunts that I once didn't believe possible," Needham says of this fond look at the men and women who risk their necks to make reel magic.
