John Buckingham (Chaplin), a lonely and repressed bank employee, decides his life would be complete if only he could meet the right girl. Through a Russian mail order bride service he meets Nadia (Kidman), an attractive but quiet woman who can't speak English. At first, John is hesitant about his new arrangement but grows fond of Nadia after several sensual encounters. However, their new life together is abruptly changed upon the arrival of Nadia's two gregarious cousins and John realizes he may be in over his head.
