This landmark German film examines an entire nation's attempts at atonement for the atrocities carried out prior to and during the Second World War.Amid the rubble of Berlin a young doctor lives a tortured existence. He suffers from hallucinations due to the time he spent in a death camp, witnessing the mass exterminations committed by the Nazi regime. When he meets his former captain, who ordered these killings, and who has now settled down to raise a family, the doctor plans to kill him.But then he wonders if this is the morally correct choice, after all.
