Vaudeville sharpshooter Johnny Carter (Ray Milland), posing as a Confederate officer wanted by the Union army, arrives in a small southern town after the Civil War to find a group of copper miners being terrorized by corrupt lawmen. The miners enlist his help in their fight, but he must also find time elude his pursuers and romance local Lisa (Hedy Lamarr).
