Abraham And Mary Lincoln - A House Divided (3 Discs)

Review

While much is known about Abraham Lincoln, the Great Emancipator, little is known about his marriage to Mary Todd, a woman of great mental frailty and First Lady during one of the most tumultuous times in American history. This six-hour collection begins with a reclusive Mary Todd Lincoln (the voice of Holly Hunter) as an elderly woman looking back on the life she spent with one of the most celebrated Presidents of the United States. Her recollections begin in the couple's youth in Kentucky. The wealthy Todd marries the backwoods, awkward Lincoln (voiced in the film by David Morse), who soon becomes an Illinois State Representative. The film continues through Lincoln's presidency and the Civil War. The troubles of the nation were only part of the strain on their marriage; the Lincoln's son Willie died while they were in the White House. The final episode tells of the assassination of Lincoln and how it impacted the mental state of his widow. The sixteenth President, speaking of Congress once declared, "A house divided will not stand."
