Robert, a down and out writer, saves a battered woman from certain death at the hands of a corrupt sheriff. In self-defense, Robert kills the sheriff and, in a panic, dumps the body in the lake. Suspicion surrounds Robert when the sheriff does not resurface. He tries to make a hasty escape from his growing list of enemies and finds out just how corrupt a small town can be. As the trail of bodies grows, the more he wishes he had left the battered woman... at the water's edge.
