The year is 1938, in the heart of the Civil War in Spain. Germany invites a group of filmmakers to shoot two versions, one in German and the other in Spanish, of the Audalusian musical drama "The Girl of Your Dreams" in Berlin.

Happy to leave the war behind them, the tiny troupe of Spaniards starts filming in Hitler's Berlin. The hospitality upon their arrival by the German Minister of Propaganda, has more to do with the young charms of Macarena Granada (Penelope Cruz). What's more, the only Andalusian-looking extras they can find in Germany are gypsies and Jewish prisoners in a nearby concentration camp. When Macarena befriends one of the prisoners and tries to help him escape, calamity ensues. Now the troupe must decide if the movie is more important than their lives.
