Roberta (1935)

Review

This elegant adaptation of the Jerome Kern/Otto Harbach stage play stars Irene Dunne as an aristocratic Russian emigrée in Paris, and Fred Astaire and Ginger Rogers as Americans abroad. Huck Haines sails all the way to the City of Lights with his friend John, whose jazz band has a couple of gigs lined up at a local club. Unfortunately, the group isn't what the proprietor expected, and he refuses to honor the engagement. So Haines and the musicians head to Roberta's -- a chic boutique owned by Huck's Aunt Minnie. It is there that John meets the Russian princess Stephanie, now Minnie's employee, and immediately falls for her. Not too much later, Huck also runs into romance... in the figure of his former girlfriend, Lizzie. Confusion, masquerades, deceptions -- and, of course, music and dance -- will be the order of the day before these two couples get their love lives sorted out...
