Cary Grant as an angel, David Niven in his first starring role as the Bishop and the beautiful Loretta Young in the title role: what could be more of a godsend?



Bishop Henry Brougham (Niven) is too busy trying to raise money from his wealthy congregation to notice his family life is falling apart. When it is almost too late, Henry prays for help and the angel Dudley (Grant) appears. At first, the Bishop resists Dudley's claim as one from above but then is won over by his angelic charm. Together, they solve the parish's financial problems only to wreak havoc on everyone's life. The water gets really deep when the Bishop's wife (Young) falls in love with Dudley and Henry goes into a jealous fit. Taking this as a sign of Henry's true love for his wife, Dudley realises his work is done...
