Review

Djilali is a ten-year child living in Beirut, Lebanon - where war is a way of life. When he is recruited to go on a special international mission for his religion, Islam - he doesn't hesiate. As each of the boys is eliminated, it becomes clear that this boy whose dreams bring tears each night will carry out the mission. He is selected because of his abilities with a gun, physical agility and ability to lie to adults convincingly. Are you shocked that he's ten years old? According to the film's prologue there have been 200,000 children killed by international terrorism. Djilali only looks like a child on the outside - he doesn't even know what real kids do.

He is sent to France to execute his mission - staying at the house of a local sympathizer. There he makes a tight friendship with Karim. They swear to protect each other, whatever happens. Karim shows him how to skateboard, plays current music with him, shares cigarettes and they talk of girls. It's a high point in this boy's totally awful childhood.

This film is actually a damned good thriller. The combination of superb acting (mostly from the child leads,) great cinematography, sound and lighting and good story-telling make this a compelling film. There is also a superb, higly listenable soundtrack of Arab music.
