The Sun Also Rises (1957)

Review

Based on the novel by Ernest Hemingway and featuring a terrific cast of Hollywood greats, The Sun Also Rises finally arrives on DVD.

American news correspondent Jake Barnes (Tyrone Power) relocates to Paris after receiving serious injuries during WWI which have rendered him impotent. Barnes links up with several other lost souls, including the lavicious Lady Brett Ashley (Ava Gardner) and drunkard Mike Campbell (Errol Flynn). In their search for new thrills, Barnes and his cohorts trundle off to Spain, where they participate in the annual Pamplona bull run and act as unofficial 'sponsors' of young matador Pedro Romero (Robert Evans). However, they find no lasting satisfaction in anything they encounter...

It was during the filming of The Sun Also Rises that former Paramount Executive, Robert Evans, unwittingly stumbled upon the title for his autobiography. When Darryl F. Zannuck was confronted by Tyrone Power, Ava Gardner and Ernest Hemingway requesting that Evans be removed from his role, Zannuck uttered the immortal line, "The kid stays in the picture."
