Review

This box set includes:

Executive Action (Dir. David Miller) (1973): Mixing narriative segments with newsreel footage, the film tells the story of a group of powerful men who plot the assasination of JFK. First they must recruit and train a shooter, then frame Lee Harvey Oswald.

The Flame And The Arrow (Dir. Jaques Tourneur) (1950): Twelfth-century Lombardy lies under the iron heel of German overlord Count Ulrich 'The Hawk', but in the mountains, guerillas yet resist. Five years before our story, Ulrich stole away the pretty wife of young archer Dardo who, cynical rather than embittered, still has little interest in joining the rebels. But this changes when his son, too, is taken from him.

His Majesty O'Keefe (Dir. Byron Haskin) (1954): An American sea captain, O'Keefe, seeks his fortune in the South Pacific attempting to enlist island natives to harvest the valuable 'copra'. However the natives, happy with their existence, see no reason to work hard to opbtain copious amounts of copra for O'Keefe.

Jim Thorpe: All American (Dir. Michael Curtiz) (1951): Superb biographical drama of the Native American super-athlete who won both the pentathlon and decathlon in the 1912 Olympics in Stockholm. Burt Lancaster delivers a fine performance as Thorpe, who battled alcoholism, fought prejudice and saw his medals taken away from him when the Olympic Committee discovered he played semi-pro sports.

South Sea Woman (Dir. Arthur Lubin (1953): Lancaster stars as a Marine gunnery sergeant on trial for desertion after the attack on Pearl Harbor who reluctantly relies on showgirl Mayo's testimony that he wasn't AWOL, but was actually helping the French resistance take out a Nazi supply ship.
