John Ford's American Comedies

Review

This box set features the following movies:

Doctor Bull (1933) Dr. Bull is an old-fashioned country doctor whose affair with the widow Janet Cardmaker is creating waves in the small town where he practices...

Judge Priest (1934) Will Rogers plays the lead roll, that of Judge William "Billy" Priest in a very patriotic (Confederate) southern town. Rogers plays a laid-back, widowed judge who helps uphold the law in his toughest court case yet. In the meantime, he plays matchmaker for his young nephew.

What Price Glory (1952) In 1918 France, Captain Flagg commands a disreputable company of Marines; his new top sergeant is his old friendly enemy, Quirt. The two men become rivals for the favors of fair innkeeper's daughter Charmaine, but the rivalry goes into reverse when Charmaine proves to be angling for a husband. When the company is ordered to the front, this comedy interlude gives way to the grim realities of war.

Steamboat Round The Bend (1935) Rogers stars as Dr. John, the proprietor of a travelling waxworks cum medicine show aboard an old steamboat on the Mississippi. Along for the ride is a skeleton crew, including the wonderfully named Fleety Belle (Anne Shirley). Their mission? To raise funds to pay the legal fees that may save Dr. John's nephew from the gallows.

When Willie Comes Marching Home (1950) When Willie leaves home to join the war effort he is all ready to become a hero, but he is only frustrated when his posting ends up to be in his home town, and he is recruited into training, keeping him from the action. However, when he finds himself accidently behind enemy lines he unexpectedly becomes a hero after all.
