Based on Marjane Satrapi's best-selling graphic novel, Persepolis centres around the life of Marjane, a spunky young girl born in Iran. She grows up in Iran with her protective parents, taking delight in her grandmother's carefree spirit and diverse music such as ABBA. However, with the death of her uncle in the Iran/Iraq war she is forced to move to Austria where she encounters racial prejudice. Luckily her strong spirit shines through both this and the tyrannical pressures she encounters as a women when she returns to Iran. The stark animated style of Persepolis keeps with the graphic novels that inspired the film. This is an electrifying, heartfelt film about coming of age despite the countless obstacles in the way.
