A restless, arrogant, aristocratic gentleman visits his recently inherited country estate, where his boredom and arrogance invite him to toy with the affections of others, only to have it backfire with tragic consequences. As Onegin plays with the affections of the maids of a nearby estate, his insult to Vladimir leads to a duel of pistols at 20 paces. Later, when the guilt-ridden Onegin returns to St. Petersburg, he bumps into Tatyanna, whom he dismissed as a child, but who has now grown up, and the tables of passion and desire turn cruelly against Onegin.
