Lucky Numbers / Let It Ride

Review

Lucky Numbers (Dir. Nora Ephron) (2001): John Travolta plays Russ Richards, a small-town weatherman who has the spending habits to match his celebrity aspirations. His unstable life is further complicated by his affair with the station's lotto girl, who is, in turn, having an affair with the station manager! As Russ' spending problems escalate he comes up with a cunning plan with his best friend to fix the lottery at the station. But the hardest part of the plan is to find a trustworthy person to cash in the ticket.

Let It Ride (Dir. Joe Pytka) (1989): Jay Trotter has waited a lifetime for this day. He's got a hot tip on a horse everyone thinks is ready for the glue factory. But, as track aficionados say, "Even when you know, you never know". One thing you can be sure of is that with Richard Dreyfuss, David Johansen, Teri Garr and more this is a winning comedy. Robbie Coltrane gives an hilarious performance as the pestered bookie, always sceptical of Trotter's run of luck. Its characters give new meaning to "the odds". And its heart will touch everyone who's wondered: "If every dog has his day, why can't every person have one?"
