Review

Towards Darkness a.k.a Hacia La Oscuridad is a gut-wrenching bilingual thriller set in the all-too-real kidnapping business that plagues Colombia. Specifically, it deals with 90 minutes in a kidnapped hostage's life, and the frustration of his family, a special ops team, and a man in charge of delivering the ransom money all feel as they rush to save him. As the story moves forward at breakneck speed, flashbacks simultaneously illustrate how all the characters got into the nightmarish situation.

The hostage is Jose Gutierrez, a young Colombian man in his early 20's. who has left his country to study in the United States. The film begins with him bound, gagged, and bruised; hopelessly waiting on a bathroom floor for his execution. He narrates the story... his story.
