Review

Satoshi Kon has been highly acclaimed for his Animé films PERFECT BLUE, MILLENNIUM ACTRESS, and TOKYO GODFATHERS. Kon makes a fluid jump to television with the series PARANOIA AGENT, which features a professional, film-like quality of image and narrative brought to the project by the director. A psychological thriller that aims for social commentary, PARANOIA AGENT is an episodic series that focuses on the victims of Shounen Bat, a mysterious assaulter, and the detectives charged with arresting the criminal. The series is darkly mysterious and enigmatic, like BOOGIEPOP PHANTOM (by Seishi Minakami, the same author as PARANOIA AGENT) and SERIAL EXPERIMENTS LAIN, but without the overtly supernatural and sci-fi elements of those series. In TRUE BELIEVERS, the second volume of the series, the police suspect arrested for the crimes will only admit to a pair of them. What's more, attacks continue to occur, and a wave of paranoia sweeps the city.
