Set against the backdrop of America's nascent pro-football league in 1925, Leatherheads stars Oscar winner Clooney as Dodge Connolly, a charming but brash football hero who is determined to guide his team from bar brawls to packed stadiums. In a final attempt to win the attentions of America he convinces a college football star to join his struggling ranks. Joining the team is Carter Rutherford (John Krasinski), a golden-boy war hero with dashing good lucks and unparalled speed on the field. However, with the arrival of Lexie Littleton (Zellweger) Dodge's dreams for football glory are close to being dashed. An aspiring journalist in the big leagues, Lexie suspects Carter's war-hero stories are not all they're cracked up to be. As she digs around in Carter's past, Dodge pursues her affections, but can he keep his team together enough to crack the big leagues.
