Gary Cooper stars as Clint Belmet, who convinces French-born Felice into posing as his wife to help him evade a misdemeanor jail term. Clint joins a wagon train heading for California, taking Felice with him, and begins to fall in love with the girl. Clint, for the first time in his life, takes a role of responsibility by becoming the wagon train's trail guide, protecting the other passengers from the nefarious schemes of gun-runner Lee Murdock.
