Two college friends, Phillip Morgan (Farley Granger) and Brandon Shaw (John Dall), murder a third friend just for the thrill of it, hiding his body in an antique chest in the middle of their New York apartment. They then proceed to arrogantly hold a perverse dinner party around this chest, inviting the victim's family, friends and fiancee, as well as their intellectual role-model, professor Rupert Cadell (James Stewart).
