Dexter: Complete Second Season (4 Discs)

Review

Dexter Morgan, the Miami PD blood splatter analyst and sharpened serial killer, returns for a second season following the traumatic conclusion of `The Ice Truck Killer' case. As the discovery of a mass underwater grave prompts a large-scale manhunt for `The Bay Harbour Butcher', Dexter, still troubled from having to murder someone who held so many answers, is left questioning his identity and his code.

The conclusion of `The Ice Truck Killer' case has opened up many questions that Dexter (Michael C. Hall) needs to answer. It has been six weeks since Dexter last killed and he is getting irritable. Constant surveillance from Sgt Doakes (Erik King), who is convinced that Dexter is in some way connected to `The Ice Truck Killer', has meant that Dexter has been unable to satisfy his murderous urges of late. Dexter's relationship with girlfriend Rita (Julie Benz) is also showing signs of strain. His connection to the incarceration of her ex-husband has led Rita to believe that Dexter may be suffering with a drug addiction and asks him to attend a Narcotics Anonymous program. It is on this program where he meets Lila (Jaime Murray), a former meth addict, pyromaniac, and artist who becomes his sponsor. Increasingly more influenced by Lila, Dexter finds himself having to make a series of life altering decisions.

Continuing the excellent writing and casting established in the previous series, Dexter's season-long story explosively and satisfactorily resolves first-season threads and lays down new ones. The Bay Harbour Butcher case cleverly brings a fascinatingly self-conscious quality to the season, as news spreads that the dead bodies are those of killers; Miami is left debating the warped ethics of The Bay Harbour Butcher much in the same way that viewers of Dexter are forced to question the twisted morality of the programme's hero.
