DraftKings Pledges Over $1.5 Million To Support Responsible Gambling Programs In Its States

There are still weeks until March, but DraftKings isn’t waiting to promote the theme. A new DraftKings responsible gambling program will augment the resources of agencies that work to make gaming safer in states that DraftKings operates.

In addition to its own internal campaigns, DraftKings will provide over $1.5 million to give the agencies the resource they need most; money. That funding could help more people make better decisions when it comes to gambling across the country.

A new DraftKings responsible gambling pledge

DraftKings announced the new program on Thursday, calling it The State Council Funding Program. Each state problem gambling council gets $15,000 per year for the next three years. In total, that commitment comes to $1.575 million.

Each council will have broad discretion to use the funds as it likes. Possible uses include conferences, helplines, and training. For example, many of these agencies connect people with compulsive gambling disorders to treatment free of charge.

“State councils provide a first line of defense for addressing the needs of people impacted by problem gambling,” said Keith Whyte, Executive Director, National Council on Problem Gambling (NCPG), whose membership includes the 35 State Affiliate Councils. “While it’s well established that these organizations provide critical assistance in the community, they don’t always have the resources and funds to take treatment and prevention to the next level. This significant initiative by DraftKings shows their commitment to and knowledge of the importance of the work state councils provide.”

Just as doing the work to promote responsible gambling is nothing new for the state agencies, DraftKings sportsbook is also an old hat in this realm. They are no strangers to partnerships along these lines.

DraftKings just deepens its commitments

Over the past year, DraftKings has been quite active on this front. The company has dedicated staff and devoted other internal resources to the cause. That’s because irresponsible gambling harms its business, too.

“Having spent several years of my career working with the state council in my home state, Massachusetts, I have seen first-hand how these organizations are a tremendous resource for individuals and families and serve as a critical stakeholder and partner for gaming operators,” said Christine Thurmond, Director, Responsible Gaming. “DraftKings is committed to advancing responsible gaming in collaboration with state councils across the U.S. Our hope is that this funding will give councils that extra support needed to fund priority areas, expand services, or hire additional staff; whatever is most needed, we want to help financially.”

DraftKings has, within the past year, also partnered with Harvard Medical School’s Cambridge Health Alliance to produce responsible gaming training. Within that same time frame, it has taken part in the American Gaming Association’s public service campaigns.

Education is one of the most important tools for responsible gambling. With this new funding, the accessibility of educational programs could grow to an unprecedented level.
