Ohio sports betting launch prompts FanDuel promo for new bettors

Ohio’s sports betting launch is less than 100 days, and FanDuel knows it.

The sports betting operator—one of the dozens of approved sportsbooks in Ohio—is offering a $100 no-deposit bonus ahead of the state’s Jan. 1, 2023 sports betting debut.

The move is likely an effort to get as many early sign-ups as possible because FanDuel has considerable competition in the state.

The offer ends on Jan. 1, 2023; it is unavailable on Jan. 2.

How the $100 FanDuel bonus works for Ohio sports betting launch

Sports betting operators like FanDuel tend to offer a variety of promotions for new customers. Sometimes those promos include risk-free bets and contest entries.

When sports betting launched in New York, Caesers gave a free NBA jersey (via a $150 NBA Shop gift card) to any bettors who wagered at least $100 on an NBA game.

In Ohio, FanDuel’s promo is a “no-deposit” freebie. This means that Ohio sports bettors get $100 in their account when they sign up. It doesn’t matter how much they deposit.

This is an important point, as operators usually require you to deposit a certain amount of money to get a bonus.

Once the money is in your account, you can’t withdraw it—you can’t just take the money and run. Instead, you have to bet the $100 credit.

If you want to make money off the FanDuel no-deposit promo, then you’ll need to place bets that win.

Here’s an example of how FanDuel’s no-deposit bonus works

For example, you download the FanDuel app on Jan. 1 and get the $100 deposit. You see that the Cleveland Browns are playing the Pittsburgh Steelers on Jan. 8.

Unbelievably, the Browns are 9-7 and need to win to get to the playoffs. The spread is Browns -5. You take the Browns with a $100 bet.

Turns out Pittsburgh, who is out of contention, had no interest in playing spoiler. The Browns win, 31-13. Your $100 bet wins, and you can withdraw those winnings.

Now, let’s say the Steelers chose not to go down without a fight and they lose 17-13. Your Browns pick loses, and you lose your $100 no-deposit bonus. Your account now has $0 in it, and you’ll need to make another deposit to bet again.

How to sign up for the FanDuel $100 bonus

To get the Ohio sports betting launch bonus, bettors will need to sign up with FanDuel before the end of the day on Jan. 1, 2023. The sign-up process is relatively simple.

You’ll need to provide:

  • Your name
  • Address
  • Phone number
  • Last four digits of your Social Security number

These are mandatory steps, and they’re used to verify your identity.

FanDuel wants to ensure you are who you say you are and that you meet the state’s requirement that all sports bettors be at least 21 years old.

Once you provide your personal information, you’ll tap the “Confirm Identity” button. FanDuel’s identity verification process typically happens instantaneously, but for some, it could take a couple of days.
