Tiger Woods’ odds at the Masters

Tiger Woods and Phil Mickelson

Traditionally, more money is bet on Tiger Woods to win the Masters than any other golfer. Of course, it makes sense, since Woods is a five-time Masters winner and just captured his fifth green jacket in 2019.

Woods is also just three majors short of Jack Nicklaus’ record 18 wins and seems to raise his game at Augusta. Plus, the odds on Woods to win at the Masters have become more attractive as he’s gotten older.

Woods was able to give it a go in 2022 and drew a phenomenal amount of betting action despite his less-than-100% condition.

He made it through the cut to play the weekend but finished in 47th place when all was said and done. We’ll have to wait and see if he’ll be in the field for the next Masters.

Masters betting truth — are lefties worth a bet?

Only four left-handed golfers have ever won one of golf’s four major championships, and three of them are previous Masters winners. Phil Mickelson, Mike Weir, Bubba Watson and Bob Charles are the lefties who have won majors, with Charles the only one not to have won a green jacket.

Mickelson won the Masters in 2004, 2006 and 2010, in addition to the 2005 PGA Championship and 2013 British Open. Weir won the 2003 Masters, and Watson has two Masters, in 2012 and 2014. Charles’ lone major win was the British Open in 1963.

The trick to betting on a lefty to win the Masters is finding one, as fewer than 5% of golfers on the PGA Tour swing from that side.

Mickelson and Watson are still around, but may have passed their prime. Weir still plays in the Masters, as well, but he finished in a tie for 51st in November. Then there’s Brian Harman, who has two PGA Tour wins and posted his best ever finish in a major when he tied for second in the 2017 US Open. His best ever finish at Augusta, however, was a tie for 44th in 2018.

The truth is that it’s possible a lefty can win at the Masters, but it’s still highly unlikely.

How to bet on the Masters

You can bet on the Masters at online sportsbooks in US states where that’s legal in all kinds of ways. You can place a futures bet on the winner ahead of the tournament, and place an outright bet when it starts and throughout. Of course, these odds will change based on recent performance and the current leaderboard, but you lock in the currently posted odds when you place your bet.

Golfer teeing off You can also bet on a golfer to take the overall lead after the first round or one golfer versus a group, like 2/3 balls, where you pick one golfer to do the best out of a set group of three. Plus, you can pick a golfer to finish in the top three, four, five, 10 or even 20 at adjusted Masters betting odds.

Head-to-heads are also available, allowing you to bet on a golfer to finish ahead of another on the final Masters leaderboard. Plus, you can get creative and bet on things like the nationality of the 2021 Masters winner.

Masters prop betting

The Masters is almost like golf’s Super Bowl in terms of the number of prop bets available. Here’s a look at just a few of the Masters props that may be available at many US online sportsbook apps:

  • Will there be a hole-in-one?
  • Will the third-round leader go on to win?
  • Over/under on the cut line?
  • Over/under on the highest/lowest single-round score?
  • Over/under on the highest single-hole score?
  • Will there be a new single-round/course record?
  • How many players will finish under par?
  • Will any player shoot four rounds in the 60s?
  • Over/under on the winning total score?

Masters live betting

Live betting has changed the way a lot of people bet on golf. It allows you to place bets on a tournament like the Masters in the middle of any round at odds that change in real time based on what’s happening on the course.

While it mostly involves betting in the same markets that you can wager on ahead of each round at constantly changing odds, live betting also opens up hole-by-hole and shot-by-shot betting. Just keep in mind that the odds change fast, making online sportsbook apps the only way to keep up and get your bets down quickly enough.

Bet on Amen Corner

Amen Corner is the name for holes 10 through 12 at Augusta National. This is among the toughest stretch of holes in golf and can often be a round- and tournament-changer for those at the top of the Masters leaderboard. Live betting on Amen Corner may be one of the most exciting golf betting experiences you’ll ever have, and you can do it through all four rounds of the Masters at online sportsbooks in the US.

Best Masters betting app

DraftKings Sportsbook appIn 2019, DraftKings inked a deal to become the official daily fantasy game of the PGA Tour. In 2020, it upped the ante, expanding that multi-year content and marketing deal to make DraftKings the first official betting operator of the PGA Tour.

Essentially, DraftKings now has the US rights to use PGA trademarks and advertise within PGA media and partner platforms. Plus, it has the content and video rights, allowing the DraftKings Sportsbook app to create all kinds of betting programming and content surrounding PGA Tour events like the Masters.

If that wasn’t reason enough to take all your Masters action to DraftKings, look at all the Masters promos and odds boosts that it typically runs. In November 2020, it offered a free $10 Masters bet to anyone who bet $20 on college football, and practically gave away money by offering +100 odds on Bryson DeChambeau making the cut when he was as hot as any golfer on tour. Expect more of the same this year.

US Masters golf betting tips

Betting on the Masters is pretty easy. Picking winners is the hard part. Here are three betting tips to keep in mind for the 2021 Masters.

  • Bet futures now: You’ll get decent odds on almost every golfer in the Masters futures market, until they take an eight-stroke lead heading into the third round. The odds drop rather dramatically for the real contenders once the tournament starts, which is why you should get your bets down early, where even defending champ and World No. 1 Dustin Johnson will be at a lofty +800 or better.
  • Like the long odds: Speaking about futures, and the decent odds you can find on almost every golfer in the Masters field, you might want to think about betting on more than one. As long as the odds are big enough, it can pay to spread your money around and bet on more than one to win. Just do the math to make sure you’ll still post a profit if one of your golfers gets that green jacket.
  • Do your homework: The more you know about the current state of the PGA Tour, the better your Masters bets will be. Do your homework, which means reading and watching everything you can about golf heading into the Masters. Do that and you’ll be making informed and educated picks instead of wild guesses.

Masters betting FAQ

Jack Nicklaus has won the Masters a record six times, in 1963, 1965, 1966, 1972, 1975 and 1986. However, Tiger Woods has five green jackets and last won just two years ago in 2019.

The green jacket was traditionally the way you could spot a member at Augusta National. Sam Snead received one when he won in 1949, and the tradition has continued ever since.

It takes a certain skill to win the Masters that may be different from the PGA Championship or US Open. Augusta National rewards putting and short-game play ahead of the long and accurate driving usually rewarded at the PGA Championship and US Open courses.

The Masters traditionally hosts an eve-of-tournament par-three contest that’s a bit of a pro-am event where family members act as caddies. You may be able to bet on it when it runs, as there is TV coverage. However, it has been canceled again this year, as it was in 2020, in accordance with social distancing protocols.
