As Maryland is getting closer to the launch of online Maryland sports betting, one sportsbook company made a stop in Baltimore on Oct. 2.
To get sports fans excited, Caesars Sportsbook hosted a big event at Baltimore’s Horseshoe Casino ahead of the state’s upcoming launch.
After pulling out at Highmark Stadium, Orchard Park in New York and Lucas Oil Stadium in Indianapolis, Indiana, Baltimore was the third stop on the Caesars Sportsbook and Casino Truck tour. In a customized 18-wheeler, the truck promoted the online sports wagering app for the players to enjoy before the Ravens game.
Maryland has recently agreed to allow rolling approval of online sports betting to launch later in 2022 and is currently reviewing the applications. Once that process is complete, licenses will be issued, and mobile sports betting in the state will begin.
Bets are currently only available at in-person Maryland casinos.
As Randy Conroy, Sr. VP and GM of Horseshoe Casino Baltimore said on Sunday:
“Mobile is not legal yet in Maryland. That’s on the horizon, but today you can come in the Horseshoe Baltimore at our Caesars Sportsbook and place your bets.”
Caesars among leading operators coming to Maryland
In addition to retail betting locations, Maryland bettors can expect the state to allow up to 60 online sports betting licenses.
Together with BetMGM, DraftKings, FanDuel and PointsBet, Caesars has already announced its presence in the state and has partnerships in place for retail betting. Caesars is the sports betting partner of Horseshoe Baltimore, which unveiled its land-based Caesars Sportsbook in December 2021.
The big opening gathered Maryland Governor Larry Hogan and Baltimore Mayor Brandon Scott as well as former Ravens’ greats Torrey Smith and Adalius Thomas plus former NBA star Muggsy Bogues.
Horseshoe Casino Baltimore’s opening marked a critical element in the transformation of the casino’s first level into a highly immersive entertainment environment.
Maryland sports betting application process is well underway
The Maryland Sports Wagering Application Review Commission (SWARC) agreed to allow rolling approval of online sports betting licenses to launch sportsbooks by the end of the year.
The commission only began accepting online sports betting applications on Sept. 7 and will continue to receive them until Oct. 21, 2022, which is when the submission period will end. After that, SWARC can take up to 45 days to review the applications and distribute licenses.
The Maryland Lottery and Gaming Control Agency (MLGCA) is responsible for completing background checks in order to determine if applicants are qualified for licenses.
Maryland Lottery and Gaming Director John Martin said in September:
“Maryland Lottery and Gaming has been hard at work on background investigations. A number of businesses that are planning to apply for mobile licenses have already submitted information to get their investigations started, and our licensing staff will continue guiding them through the qualification procedures. We’re focused on expediting our part of the process so mobile betting can start as soon as possible.”
