When it’s been almost four years since any player at a southern Mississippi casino has won a seven-figure slots jackpot, the inevitability factor is high. This past weekend, the inevitable became tangible in Biloxi.
An Alabama woman hit a $1 million jackpot at Biloxi’s Beau Rivage Resort and Casino. This is the second jackpot at the South Mississippi casino in less than two weeks and the largest since 2018.
Progressive jackpot win breaks drought at Mississippi casino
Beau Rivage spokeswoman Mary Cracchiolo said the woman, who did not want to be identified, put a $41.60 ticket inside the Wheel of Fortune slot machines on Sunday evening.
Just one minute later, she won the game’s progressive jackpot. The prize came to $1,179,313 before taxes.
According to Mary Perez of The Sun Herald, it’s the largest progressive jackpot won at a Biloxi casino since 2018. That year, a Florida man won almost $1.3 million playing slots at the Hard Rock in Biloxi.
Good luck abounding lately in Mississippi
The Alabama woman’s $1.1 million dollar haul is the most lucrative of recent southern Mississippi casino wins. It’s far from the only one recently, though.
The first jackpot at Beau Rivage came on Nov. 16 when a New York woman won $207,875 on a blackjack progressive table game. That game allows players to make side bets while they’re playing and each of those wagers increases the amount of the pot.
Just hours after the Alabama woman broke the dry spell of million-dollar prizes, another woman from Florida hit a jackpot in Biloxi as well. A spokesperson for Harrah’s Gulf Coast said she won a progressive slot jackpot worth $100,000.
All these pots combined still don’t touch the biggest win in southern Mississippi casino history, however. Perez reports that Thomas McMillian won the largest jackpot in the state’s 30-year history of coastal casinos. In 2009, McMillian, a Biloxi resident, won $14 million on a Wheel of Fortune slot machine at Hard Rock Casino.
McMillan’s good fortune that year kept some of the monetary fortunes in southern Mississippi. Since then, however, it seems that out-of-state residents have been faring better when it comes to hitting the biggest prizes.
