In March 2016, PokerStars partnered up with Resorts Casino Hotel Atlantic City and began offering legal online poker games in New Jersey. As a result, players in the Garden State can take advantage of the poker room’s battle-hardened software, superb welcome bonuses, large tournament selection, and generous VIP program.
PokerStars NJ welcome packages
Currently, PokerStars NJ offers two welcome packages for new depositors. Please note you can only choose one or the other.
$30 free play
The standard package is a $30 free-play bonus you get for depositing $20 or more. This is an extremely generous offer that essentially amounts to a 150 percent deposit bonus. You must use promotion code FREE30 to qualify. Of the 30 dollars, $20 is available to play cash games. The remaining $10 are in the form of Spin & Go tickets. Spin & Gos are a fast-paced tournament format with prize pools as large as 1,000 times your tournament buy-in.
The cash game bonus release schedule is as follows:
1) $10 ia added to your account within 36 hours of your first deposit
2) Another $10 chunk is credited to your account seven days after the first one
The Spin & Go tickets, on the other hand, are awarded separately. Players get three $1 tickets on the day of deposit, one $2 ticket on the next day, and one $5 ticket the day after that. Tickets cannot be transferred or redeemed for cash.
While there are no official bonus wagering requirements, PokerStars reserves the right to forfeit a player’s bonus, should they believe that player is going against the spirit of the offer by attempting to withdraw the bonus immediately after receiving it.
100 percent first deposit bonus, up to $600
Make a deposit with PokerStars using bonus code STARS600 and have your deposit matched, dollar for dollar, up to $600. It is possible to claim the offer’s maximum value over the course of three consecutive deposits. Here’s an example:
- First deposit of $200, receive a $200 bonus
- Second deposit of $300, receive a $300 bonus (for a total of $500 in bonuses)
- Third deposit of $500, receive a $100 bonus (for a total of $600 – the maximum allowed)
Important note though: making a withdrawal after your first or second deposit will render any subsequent deposits ineligible for this promotion. However, you will be allowed to keep any bonuses you already received.
The bonus will release into your account as you earn VIP Player Points (VPPs). You earn 5.5 VPPs for every dollar paid in rake or tournament fees. Your VPPs will then be converted to bonus funds at a rate of 100 points per $10. You will have four months to meet the VPP requirement. Here’s an example:
You deposit $200 with PokerStars and use promo code STARS600 to receive a $200 bonus. You play some cash games and, over the course of the next few weeks, pay a total of $200 in rake, earning 5.5 x 200 = 1,100 VPPs. Since 100 points equal $10 in released bonus funds, a total of $110 will be added to your account.
The above essentially equates to a 55 percent rakeback deal. That is an unparalleled proposition.
Depositors Freeroll tournament ticket
All first-time depositors receive a free ticket to the Depositors Freeroll tournament, which is hosted on the last Sunday of a given month. Your ticket will be valid for 60 days and cannot be redeemed or exchanged.
The freeroll’s guaranteed prize pool varies from month to month and typically hovers around the $200 mark. Check the poker lobby for the next tournament’s prize pool.
PokerStars NJ review
PokerStars NJ Online Poker Site Review
- New Player Bonus
- Game Selection
- Customer Support
- Cashier Options
Exceptional desktop software and a fully functional mobile applications for Android and iOS. The largest game variety and tournament selection in the industry. Welcome bonuses are unrivaled in New Jersey, and the VIP loyalty program provides between 9% and 28% rakeback. Customer support quality could definitely be improved. Player pool is very disappointing, with fewer than 300 players during peak hours and an average of 100 throughout the day.
PokerStars NJ poker room history
On April 15, 2011, PokerStars stopped serving U.S. poker players after the country’s Department of Justice unsealed an indictment against some of the company’s high-ranking executives.
After nearly five years of uncertainty and legal turmoil, PokerStars managed to re-enter the North American market by taking advantage of New Jersey’s online gaming regulations. The poker room partnered up with Resorts Atlantic City and began offering legal games, under gaming license number NJIGP 16-008, in March 2016.
The company’s headquarters are on the Isle of Man. The Stars Group, a subsidiary of Amaya Gaming, runs the organization.
PokerStars NJ uses an improved version of the same software U.S. players enjoyed prior to 2011.
Additionally, the company partnered up with casino software provider NetEnt, allowing it to offer:
PokerStars’ return to the North American market has not had the revitalizing effect on the online poker economy that some had hoped it would. The site’s revenues barely totals 38 percent of New Jersey’s entire online poker market. The entire market only comprises 10 percent of the state’s taxable online gambling income.
PokerStars NJ’s casino hotel partner in New Jersey
PokerStars’ land-based New Jersey partner is Resorts Casino Hotel in Atlantic City. The resort officially opened its doors on May 26, 1978. Previously known as Resorts International Casino Atlantic City, the establishment underwent major renovations in 1998, 2002, and 2011.
The Roaring Twenties-themed 100,000 square-foot building is owned by DGMB Casinos, a holder of a New Jersey gaming license. The resort expanded in 2004 with the introduction of the Rendezvous Tower, which is a 27-story building housing hundreds of hotel rooms.
As of Sept. 22, 2018, the Resorts casino is open 24 hours a day, and spreads close to 2,500 slot machines. Some of the slot titles include:
- Alladin’s Fortune 3D
- Plants vs. Zombies 3D
- Wheel of Fortune Double Diamond 3D
- Lightning Link
Additionally, table game enthusiasts can enjoy the following:
- Mini Baccarat
- Three card poker
- Let It Ride
- Pai Gow
- Four card poker
The hotel boasts 942 suites and guest rooms in its Rendezvous and Ocean towers. Customers can get free suite upgrades when booking rooms on certain days of the year. Additionally, U.S. military personnel get a permanent 10 percent discount.
Available restaurants and diners include:
- Capriccio Italian Restaurant
- Cielo Wine Bar
- LandShark Bar & Grill
- Gallagher’s Steak House
PokerStars NJ player pool
PokerStar’s New Jersey player pool is separate from their global one. While the latter regularly sees over 10,000 active players, the former peaks around 310. It can even go as low as 40 during early morning hours. Peak hours are between 7:00 and 9:00 p.m. Eastern Time.
PokerStars NJ online gaming options
PokerStar NJ’s selection of cash games and tournaments is unmatched by any other New Jersey poker room.
For Texas hold’em, a few micro games are always available, with stakes ranging from $0.01/$0.02 to $0.05/$0.10. The majority of games fall between $0.05/$0.10 and $1/$2. The highest available stakes are $25/$50. Games can be played in no-limit and limit formats. However, the former sees significantly more action.
Most table games are of the six-max variety. There are only a few full-ring tables active at any given time.
Omaha poker cash games are available in limits as low as $0.01/$0.02 and as high as $40/$80. Six-max tables are significantly less active than their hold’em counterparts. Both standard and Hi/Lo varieties are available. Plus, betting formats include limit, no-limit, and pot-limit.
There are 2-7 Triple Draw tables available in 6-max and heads-up mode. Stakes go as low as $0.50/$1 and as high as $40/$80. The gamevailable in Limit, Pot Limit and No Limit formats.
A few 5-Card Draw games run at numerous limits, with $0.05/$0.10 and $0.25/$0.50 being the most popular. Limit and no-limit games are available.
Another available variant is 8-game poker. Tables can accommodate up to six players each. Small-stakes players can join the $1/$2 games, while high-rollers can go nuts at the $100/$200 tables.
Other formats available at PokerStars NJ include:
- Limit Badugi
- No-limit 2-7 Single Draw
However, these will rarely see any serious action.
PokerStar’s exclusive ZOOM format is extremely popular across its network. In ZOOM poker, you are matched against a constantly-changing pool of players. You move from one table to another, playing each hand against a different set of opponents.
While thousands of poker players participate in ZOOM games on PokerStar’s international sites, the New Jersey version suffers from an almost total lack of activity. However, a few no-limit hold’em ZOOM games should be available during peak activity hours.
Sit & Go tournaments
The popular winner-takes-all tournament format Sit & Gos come in a variety of forms o the site.
Texas Hold’em SnG’s range in size from two to 10 players. Buy-ins can be as low as $0.25 or as high as $500. Games, however, are available in no-limit formats only.
Omaha SnG’s are not as popular as hold’em ones. Available only in heads-up, pot-limit format, with buy-ins ranging from $1 to $500. A Hi/Lo six-player variant is available too. Those tickets cost between $5 and $200 each.
SnG’s run in either Turbo or Hyper-Turbo mode. In Turbo mode, blinds are increased every five to six minutes, while in Hyper-Turbo mode the increase happens every three minutes.
Spin & Go tournaments
In a Spin & Go tournament each player starts with 500 chips. Buy-ins ranging from $1 to $25. There are three participating players per game. The prize pool is randomly determined at the start of each tournament and can range from two to even 1,000 times your buy-in size.
The odds of landing a specific prize pool multiplier vary greatly. In fact, they range from around 72 percent for the lowest 2x multiplier, to 0.001 percent for the highest 1,000x multiplier. Statistically speaking, the majority of Sit & Go tournaments will feature a multiplier between two and six.
The house rake equals seven percent of the total prize pool.
Multi-table tournaments (MTTs)
MTTs are where PokerStars NJ truly shines and differentiates itself from other New Jersey online poker rooms. Dozens of tournaments run on a regular basis, with buy-ins ranging from $0.10 to $1,000. Most MTTs start between 12:00 and 22:00 ET. Example tournaments include:
- NL Hold’em $200 guaranteed: starts at 3:00 p.m. with a guaranteed prize pool of $200 and unlimited re-buys. Add-ons are also available too. The buy-in is $3. A different version of this tournament, with a $5 buy-in, is also available. That tournament starts at 02:00 p.m.
- KO Fever $15, $1,000 guaranteed: This event is a no-limit hold’em eventwith a guaranteed prize pool of $1,000. Blinds increase every five to six minutes. The buy-in is $15. There are no rebuys or add-ons. Depending on the number of participants, first place usually pays between $130 and $180.
- Change-Up $20: This event has a guaranteed $750 prize pool. There are also unlimited re-entries during late registration period. The tournament starts at 7:30 p.m., and the buy-in is $20. Expect around 25-30 players to join, as well as a first-place prize of between $250 and $300.
- Nightly Stars $100: This is one of PokerStar’s most popular MTT’s. It is a $100 entry with a $10,000 guaranteed prize pool. There are unlimited re-entries too. The event starts at 7:00 p.m. with an average of 120-150 participants. First place gets you around $2,000.
Tournaments offering PL Omaha and no-limit 2-7 Single Draw poker game formats are also available. But they are few and far between.
PokerStars’ most popular tournament series has to be the Sunday Majors, which comprises five different tournaments:
1) Sunday Warm-Up
2) Sunday Storm
3) Sunday Special
4) Sunday High Roller
5) Sunday Supersonic
Special events and satellite tournaments are another hallmark of PokerStars NJ. However, they vary significantly from month to month. Make sure to download the poker room application and check the ‘Events‘ tab frequently.
PokerStars NJ play money games
PokerStars NJ offers games in both real money and play money modes. Play money games are accessible from any state, not just New Jersey. Cash games, S&G’s and MTTs are all available for fun money.
Moreover, every new PokerStars NJ account is automatically credited with 1 million play chips.
PokerStars NJ mobile application
The poker room’s mobile software is available for download from the Apple App Store. The app works on both iPhone and iPad devices. Players can obtain the Android version by navigating to the PokerStarsNJ site from an Android device and tapping ‘Mobile Poker‘ in the menu.
PokerStars NJ’s mobile app offers all the same tournaments and table games that are available through the desktop version. An additional ‘Quick Seating‘ feature is included too, which helps minimize time spent navigating through the app. Tables loaded in less than 10 seconds on our iPhone. Safe to assume similar performance on newer Android devices.
Betting, raising, and reraising are quick and easy. The interface buttons are spaced appropriately, rendering misclicks highly unlikely. Without ever leaving the app, you can:
- Make deposits and withdrawals
- Contact technical support
- Check account status and loyalty points
- Keep track of your bonuses
- Request hand histories
A great app overall.
Registering a PokerStars NJ account
Accounts cannot be registered through the PokerStars NJ website. To register an account, you must first download the desktop or mobile poker application, then click or tap the ‘Create Account‘ button.
If you already have an account at one of PokerStars’ international rooms, you can use it to speed up the registration process.
Residency requirement for PokerStars NJ players
You must be 21 or older to register an account with PokerStars NJ. Additionally, and as per New Jersey regulations, you must be physically located within NJ state lines in order to participate in the room’s real-money games. It is possible to create a real money account and deposit and withdraw from any state.
When attempting to join the real money tables for the first time, you will be asked to provide the last four digits of your Social Security Number. This helps confirm your age and address. If you are unable to provide a valid SSN for any reason, PokerStars will ask you to provide photocopies of certain documents to complete account verification. You will receive e-mail confirmation once your account is verified.
The poker room uses geo-location to validate your physical presence in New Jersey at the time of play, so make sure Wi-Fi is enabled on your device.
All pretty much standard restrictions, to be found at any online NJ poker room.
PokerStars NJ customer support and account security
Players can contact support one of two ways:
1) By using the FAQ on the website. While this section lists multiple questions and provides adequate answers, we found the FAQ navigation system to be extremely awkward.
Clicking on a question does not reveal an answer. Instead, it redirects the user to the question’s category page, where you have to again locate and click on your question. You’re going to find your answers here, just be prepared to do some clicking.
2) Players can contact Support by e-mail using the on-site contact form. While replies often arrive in less than an hour, we were not impressed by the quality of support.
Not only were some the replies we received completely unhelpful, they were also poorly written, indicating that perhaps we were not chatting with native English speakers. The quality of support varies depending on the representative handling our issue. However, compared to pre-2011 PokerStars support, current customer service feels completely off.
On the other hand, account security is top-notch. Downloadable files are signed with a 2048-bit RSA certificate, issued by VeriSign. Connections to and from the poker room software are encrypted using the TLS protocol and a 2048-bit RSA key.
PokerStars’ server validates every keyboard and mouse input. The poker room’s random number generator uses a combination of players’ mouse movements and outputs from a Swiss quantum entropy generator.
No cards are dealt until the software has enough data to generate a truly random outcome.
PokerStars NJ player rewards and VIP program
The PokerStars VIP rewards club revolves around accumulating StarsCoins. StarsCoins are awarded for completing Steps, which is in turn accomplished by earning VPPs. The poker tables display a progress bar indicating how many additional VPPs needed to complete the current Step. In general, 5.5 VPPs are awarded for every $1 paid in rake or tournament fees.
The number of VPPs required to complete a single Step vary depending on account level and range from 5 VPPs for BronzeStar to 400 VPPs for Supernova accounts.
The number of StarsCoins awarded for completing a single Step vary as well, ranging from seven to 20 for BronzeStar, to between 2,000 and 2,200 for Supernova. An unfinished Step will reset at the end of the month.
VPP Rewards levels
StarsCoins can be converted to cash rewards and tournament buy-ins, effectively serving as a rakeback mechanism. How much rakeback you receive will depend on how many StarsCoins you accumulate. Below is a list of the number of VPPs required to reach a level, along with the maximum rakeback you can expect for completing all the Steps for that particular level. The total number of Steps per level is included as well.
|Level||VPPs required||Max rakeback||Number of steps||Max StarsCoins|
Note that, should you advance in levels, VPPs accumulated will count towards the next level reached.
How to move up Rewards levels
BronzeStar has a total of 20 steps, with each Step requiring five VPPs to complete. This makes for a total of 100 VPPs required to reach ChromeStar level.
At the same time, there are 25 steps in ChromeStar, with each Step requiring 20 VPPs. If you accumulate 100 VPPs and reach ChromeStar, you will be immediately placed in ChromeStar Step 6, since you already accumulated the VPPs required to complete the first five ChromeStar Steps (5 x 20 = 100 VPPs).
Total number of StarsCoins you can earn depends on your account level and on the number of Steps you manage to complete. For example, and as seen above, BronzeStar account holders can earn a maximum of 169 StarsCoins by completing all 20 BronzeStar Steps; SilverStar account holders can earn up to 6,400 StarsCoins by completing all 20 SilverStar Steps.
Completing fewer than the total number of Steps available at a given level simply means you will receive less-than-maximum StarsCoins, which results in less-than-maximum rakeback.
StarsCoins can be exchanged in the PokerStars NJ store for cash or tournament entries at a rate of 1,000 StarsCoins per $10.
Breaking down how VIP Status Rewards work
Here’s a quick and dirty example of the VIP Status Rewards program at work:
You pay $100 in rake. You receive 5.5 VPPs per dollar paid in rake, for a total of 550 VPPs. This will level your account to SilverStar status.
Since, on the way up, you would have completed all the Steps for BronzeStar and ChromeStar levels, you would have been credited with the combined maximum StarsCoins possible at each of these two levels, which are 169 and 1,365, respectively. You therefore end up with a total of a little more than 1,500 StarsCoins.
And since you can get $10 in cash for every 1,000 StarsCoins, you would end up with a bonus of $15, which is the 15 percent maximum effective rakeback possible for a ChromeStar account.
This system may feel a bit complicated at first. However, you’ll get the hang of it quickly once you start playing. Overall, this VIP program offers a better rakeback deal than most New Jersey poker rooms.
Does PokerTracker support PokerStars NJ?
Yes. However, you will need to configure PokerTracker to properly handle your PokerStars NJ hand histories. See this guide for details.
PokerStars NJ bonus offers
Apart from the excellent welcome bonuses discussed earlier, you can take advantage of the Spin & Go x2 promotion as well.
Opt-in to the promotion via the Challenge Window, and start playing Spin & Go’s. If you land a 2x prize pool multiplier and finish first or second, you’ll be awarded a certain number of points, depending on your performance. Placing third will deduct five points from your total. Reach 100 total points and receive a bonus of up to $5,000.
PokerStars NJ banking options
Deposits can be made using one of the following methods:
- eChecks: Funds will be instantly available for play. However, you’ll have to wait up to seven days for your eCheck to clear before PokerStars will allow you to withdraw.
- Skrill: Quick and free. You can top off your Skrill account using a credit or debit card.
- MasterCard and Visa: High rejection rates, but convenient enough to be worth a try.
- Casino cage: Make a cash deposit at Resorts Hotel Casino Alantic City. Bring a valid, government-issued ID for verification.
- PayNearMe: Go to your cashier, print out a PaySlip, and take it to a 7-Eleven store to fund your PokerStars NJ account with cash.
- PokerStars Play+ Card: a prepaid Discover card. It can be topped up using any credit card. It is a great alternative if your Visa or MasterCard get rejected.
- Neteller: This is another instant payment method.
Deposits can be as small as $10. Maximum deposit accounts vary from method to another and from one player’s account to another. Your current limits will be displayed in your cashier window.
The following Cashout methods are available:
- Casino cage
- PokerStars Play+ Card
Note that if you used eChecks or Skrill/Neteller to deposit during the past 12 months, PokerStars NJ will only process withdrawals through these same channels, with eChecks taking priority over Skrill and Neteller.
Therefore, if you want to use any of the remaining three cashout methods, you should not be making deposits using eCheck or Skrill/Neteller.
For example, you make a deposit using eChecks, then another deposit using Neteller. Less than 12 months after your eChecks deposit, you decide to make a withdrawal via the casino cage option. However, this won’t be possible – only eCheck will be available.
PokerStars Play+ Card cashouts should be avoided, unless you are planning to spend your cash at a store that accepts Discover card payments.
Latest Updates at PokerStars Online Casino – August 2018
PokerStars has big plans to roll out a new rewards program by the end of the year. That’s good news on two fronts: the technical issues that have plagued the site and vexed customers will be gone and the new program is Star Rewards, already in use elsewhere and known for its stability. The Star Rewards program uses the stakes of the game, frequency of play and amount of deposits to calculate its awards.
Also new to PokerStars is the Moneymaker PokerStars Player’s Championship Tour, in honor of Chris Moneymaker and his golden run to the WSOP Main Event bracelet 15 years ago. There will be 8 stops across the U.S. on the tour, and one online event. (September 30th).
As for the PokerStars online site, it has been announced that Showtime Hold’em is being retired and a new game, titled Unfold will take its place. This game is based on Texas Hold’em but with an additional side pot contested by players who fold pre-flop. This will give players another chance to win every hand, even if the cards dealt aren’t worth the paper they’re printed on. Be sure to check it out.
