The Philadelphia Phillies’ World Series run helped propel a FanDuel Sportsbook in Pennsylvania to a record-breaking month in October.
Even though the Phillies fell to the Houston Astros in the Fall Classic, the FanDuel Sportsbook at Live! Casino & Hotel recorded the biggest monthly handle to date at a physical Pennsylvania sportsbook with over $10 million wagered.
The Rivers Casino in Pittsburgh was the previous record holder, having set the state’s sports betting record in December 2021.
Location helps Live! Casino Philidelphia break state record
Bryan Newman, the sportsbook general manager, said part of the success is due to the sportsbook’s location. The sportsbook sits adjacent to Citizens Bank Park, where the Phillies play their home games.
“It really gives you goosebumps just thinking about — it’s a lot of fun being where we are at the moment,” Newman said.
According to the Philadelphia Business Journal, the FanDuel Sportsbook saw a 50% increase in betting handle since the start of the National League Championship Series. With baseball season now at an end, hockey, basketball and NFL betting are left to anchor the sportsbook till March.
Across the US, the best business month for sports betting tends to be March when the NCAA Men’s Basketball Tournament is in full swing. Last March, FanDuel Sportsbook recorded $6.7 million in sports betting handle during the tournament.
World Cup could provide better-than-average November
There is still one sleeper event that might help increase betting numbers. The 2022 FIFA Men’s World Cup begins on Sunday, November 20, when host nation Qatar takes on Ecuador.
The tournament runs from Nov. 20 through Dec. 18. The United States plays its first match of the tournament against Wales on Nov. 21 at 9 p.m. Eastern Time. The US is +11000 to win the tournament on FanDuel, a far cry from favorite Brazil at +430.
The continuation of the NBA, NFL, and college football seasons will definitely help make November another good month for sportsbooks across the country. October 2022 could stand as a memorable month for Live! Casino & Hotel in Philadelphia, though.
