Louisiana sports betting exceeds expectations in first year

Despite the Louisiana Lottery passing on its sports betting opportunity, state regulators are pleased with the industry after a full year of operationLouisiana Gaming Control Board Chairman Ronnie Johns said Louisiana sports betting had exceeded expectations.

“We could not be more pleased with the first year, we’ve had virtually no problems. Obviously, you want your numbers to be good for it to be successful, and it has. But as a regulator, first and foremost, you want things to go smooth and compliant and we’ve had no problems.”

Louisiana sports betting beats initial estimates

In 2022, Louisiana sportsbooks took more than $2 billion in bets.

As a result, the state generated approximately $32 million, beating first-year estimates by $2 million. Additionally, of the total amount gambled in Louisiana, 85% of bets were placed online, according to Johns.

State lottery still searching for sports betting partner

State gaming law sets aside one online skin (website) for the Louisiana Lottery. However, after a year of operation, the lottery has yet to find a partner.

In June, Louisiana Lottery spokesperson Kimberly Chopin told LSR the lottery was in discussion with an online operator. However, talks with the mystery operator have fallen apart, and the lottery is now evaluating options.

But the state lottery isn’t the only one taking its time to enter the Louisiana market. Fanatics, which plans to launch in 15 to 20 markets by the start of the 2023 NFL season, has yet to put the Bayou State on its radar.

Johns said he has not had any conversations with Fanatics.

The ninth online sportsbook will be Betway when it launches later this year. Louisiana has 40 available skins, but according to Johns, there has yet to be any conversation about the remaining 31 spots.

Operators live in the state include:

  • Barstool Sportsbook
  • BetRivers Sportsbook
  • BetMGM
  • Caesars Sportsbook
  • DraftKings Sportsbook
  • FanDuel Sportsbook
  • PointsBet
  • WynnBet
