If The Plaza Hotel & Casino in Las Vegas is rocking on Memorial Day weekend this year, don’t come knocking. That weekend is when the casino will celebrate the grand opening of its new live entertainment venue, the Sand Dollar Lounge Downtown.
While live entertainment might be what draws attention, the new venue will offer more than a nightly show. In fact, the landscape of the space is a throwback to some of Las Vegas’ rich history.
Sand Dollar Lounge downtown opening soon
In a press release, The Plaza Hotel & Casino shared that while the venue will open to the public earlier next month, the party will really start on Thursday, May 26. The grand opening festivities will continue through Memorial Day. This year, that’s Monday, May 30.
The new venue will be adjacent to the Nevada casino’s gaming floor. It features space for 300 guests. In addition to free live entertainment every night, the attractions will include craft cocktails and a menu from Pop-Up Pizza.
“The Plaza is known for its vintage Vegas character and The Sand Dollar Lounge Downtown will be a perfect complement to the experience we offer our guests,” said Jonathan Jossel, CEO of The Plaza Hotel & Casino.
“We are very excited to welcome The Sand Dollar Lounge Downtown, which will create a late-night destination for live music and craft cocktails unlike any other in downtown Las Vegas.”
The name of the space implies the vintage Vegas character Jossel referenced. That implication carries into the aesthetic of the new lounge at the casino.
Sand Dollar Lounge hearkens back to its namesake
Those familiar with Las Vegas history will know The Sand Dollar Blues Bar. That famous bar opened in 1976 and operated continuously through 2007. Two years later, it reopened as The Sand Dollar Lounge.
In 2015, Nathan Grates and Anthony Jamison took over the management of that property. They also worked with The Plaza to create the new lounge at the casino. Elements mirroring the original location include chandeliers and the physical layout of the property.
The 4,000-square-foot space at The Plaza takes those elements to a larger scale though, and promises to feature national headlining acts just as The Sand Dollar Blues Bar once did. Those bookings will begin next month on Memorial Day Weekend.
