Red Fortune slot review
Players looking for a simple slot machine with a dash of exotic flair should enjoy the lovely Red Fortune slot game. Konami infuses a typical five-reel slot game with Chinese-inspired symbols and art for a gaming session that is easy on the eyes.
The mixture of stacked wilds and action-stacked symbols provides for some exciting spins, and the wild multipliers in the bonus round can spice up the game. Let’s see what fortunes lay ahead.
Red Fortune uses a simple red background with lovely gold-decorated pillars to line the reels, which lets the symbols stand out well. The game uses a standard set of card symbols for the lower values. The “A, K, Q, J, 10 and 9” are fairly generic, but they at least have a good mix of colors and thick borders to make them easy to see.
The symbols are a little more impressive, with vines, fruit, an amulet and a golden vessel on the board. The wild symbol is a pretty tile with Chinese characters on it, and the bonus space is a bright yin-yang symbol. All of the symbols have a bright, shiny look that leaps off of the board.
The sound design is relatively disappointing. The basic game has standard slot machine sound effects. Players only have the clicks of the reels and the occasional chime or bell to break up the game.
There doesn’t seem to be any sound effects that help with the theme. The “big” win indicator is generic orchestral music. The bonus round does at least have some nice Chinese instrumental music to build up the excitement, but it’s a noticeable exception.
Red Fortune: Core gameplay
This game is a fairly standard five-reel online slot machine with three rows. There are 30 paylines, and players have to pay for all 30 each spin. There is no feature fee though.
Players need to get sets of three symbols to make a winning match. Only the golden symbol pays out for a pair. All matches need to run left to right along a payline.
There are wild spaces available that can stand in for anything except the bonus symbol, but note that they only appear on the third, fourth and fifth reels. While there’s no guarantee, playes should note that the wilds do often form long stacks.
As is common in Konami games, Red Fortune utilizes a version of action-stacked symbols. In this game, the feature selects sections of the first and second reels to replace with one shared symbol. This symbol can be anything except for the bonus symbol or the wild symbol. In practice, this means that occasionally the first and second reels will all fill up with the same symbol to set up some nice paylines.
The general game revolves around the connection between the wilds and the action-stacked symbols. Since wild spaces can’t appear in the first or second reel, paylines are a little less likely to start.
Also, note that none of the non-bonus combinations of three pay more than break even. In fact, players have to get more than four-of-a-kind of at least a picture symbol before a single line pays above the total bet. This means that there are longer losing streaks and that wins are generally not that impressive.
The whole slot game generally depends on the spins that have the action-stacked symbols load up the first two reels and a few stacked wilds to fill the last three reels. Getting a few winning paylines of four or five of the picture symbols heals the bankroll while players wait for the potential big combinations in the bonus game.
Red Fortune: Free spins bonus round
Red Fortune’s bonus feature is a free spin bonus game. Players who get at least three of the yin-yang symbols anywhere on the reels will trigger a scatter win along with some free spins. Three, four and five bonus symbols respectively pay 4x, 10x and 600x the total bet as the scatter win. They also respectively payout 8, 12 and 25 free spins.
The free spin round plays out the same as the main game, except for the wild multipliers. During the free spin round, any wild symbol that appears on the reels and completes a payline will change into either a 2x or 3x multiplier. Multiple wild multipliers in one payline will stack up to increase the payout.
While wins in the free spin round aren’t guaranteed, a lucky spin can add up to quite the jackpot. It is also possible to add more free spins to the counter by hitting the bonus symbol scatter win again. During the bonus round, it’s a little easier since even just a pair of bonus symbols adds five spins to the counter. The rest of the bonus symbols pay out as usual.
Final thoughts
Red Fortune is a fairly nice if not particularly unique free slot machine game. The artwork is fine, even if the sound design isn’t too exciting. The basic game has some reasonably fun swings between losing streaks and loaded reels, and the wild multipliers that go along with the free spins add some excitement to the bonus game.
The RTP of 96.01% is also fine and in line with similar slot machines. There’s not a lot to make this machine better than any other, but players who are looking for a simple machine with an alright bonus round could do a lot worse. These are fine middle-of-the-road slots.
