Arizona Sports Betting Rides Big March Heading Into Slow Sports Season

Slow Months Ahead For Arizona Sports Betting, Post Record In March.

Arizona will coast into the slow months of June and July, having set a new record for sports betting in March.

On the back of March Madness and the NBA playoffs, Arizona sportsbooks took in a record $691 million in bets during March. According to the Arizona Department of Gaming, the result was a 40% increase compared to the $491.7 million in February.

High look at Arizona sports betting numbers

For March, operators generated $38.9 million in sports betting revenue, translating to a 5.6% hold. Compared to February’s $25.6 million, it was a 52% increase. However, March revenue was still 24% below the November all-time high of $51.4 million. 

The state cashed in on $1.9 million in taxes

In a statement, ADG Director Ted Vogt said:

“March was an exciting month for Arizona event wagering, with major sporting events like NCAA’s March Madness helping set a single month event wagering record. I look forward to seeing how the industry continues to develop as we finish out the first year of legal event wagering in the coming months.”

What about mobile wagering in Arizona?

Overall, 99.5% of the total handle came via mobile platforms. Arizona sportsbooks accepted roughly $687.7 million in mobile bets for March. 

Top operators include:

  • DraftKings Sportsbook – $230.2 million in bets
  • FanDuel Sportsbook – $187.4 million in bets
  • BetMGM Sportsbook – $133.7 million in bets

As for revenue, FanDuel held the top spot with $13.4 million. Next in line were BetMGM ($10.3 million) and DraftKings ($7.2 million).

On the topic of retail sports betting, there were only two retail sportsbooks open in March:

  • The FanDuel Sportsbook at Footprint Center
  • Caesars Sportsbook at Chase Field

Combined, both retail sportsbooks accepted $3.3 million in bets. Other retail locations on the horizon include:

  • BetMGM Sportsbook at State Farm Stadium
  • DraftKings Sportsbook at TPC Scottsdale
  • Barstool Sportsbook at Phoenix Raceway

Arizona market share at a glance

Of the 18 legal sports betting operators in Arizona, DraftKings continues its hold on the total market share with 33.3%. The next closest is FanDuel with 27.1% and BetMGM with 19.3%.

Others include:

  • Caesars – 13.9%
  • Barstool – 2.8%
  • WynnBet – 1.4%

BetRivers, Betfred, SuperBook, and TwinSpires amount to less than 1% of the market share in Arizona.
