Owner of the downtown Las Vegas Golden Nugget Casino files plans for new venue

Houston billionaire Tilman Fertitta has filed plans for a casino resort on the Las Vegas Strip. However, before construction begins, the Clark County Commission (CCC) will review the project details on Oct. 19.

In June, Fertitta spent $270 million on a 6-acre plot of land at the southeast corner of Las Vegas Boulevard and Harmon Avenue.

Tilman intends to transform the location into a 43-story, 2,420-room hotel and Las Vegas casino. A vast project complete with villas, VIP salons and a bar & lounge space for high-limit gamblers.

Best known as the owner of the Houston Rockets (NBA), Fertitta also owns the Golden Nugget Casino in downtown Las Vegas. Fertitta’s net worth is estimated to be around $7.7 billion, including several other businesses and a restaurant empire.

In May, DraftKings acquired Golden Nugget Online Gaming from Fertitta in a $365 million all-stock offer.

Jeff Cantwell, executive vice president of development for Fertitta Entertainment said:

“We have acquired a truly unique piece of real estate and are actively exploring this development opportunity. While we continue to go through the review and planning process, no firm decision has yet been made concerning our future plans.”

Although plans are not concrete yet, they also include the following:

  • Restaurants
  • Convention space
  • Spa
  • Wedding chapel
  • Auto showroom
  • Theater with roughly 2,500 seats

Earlier this year, Golden Nugget also received preliminary status from the Illinois Gaming Board for a casino in Danville, Illinois. Danville Development LLC will spearhead the project, which is expected to open in early 2023.

The new Illinois casino will feature 41,500 square feet of gaming space with 500 slot machines, 14 table games and two restaurants.

In 2019, state lawmakers passed the Illinois Gaming Act, which allowed six new casinos

New casino regions are:

  • Rockford
  • Waukegan
  • South Suburbs
  • Williamson County
  • Danville
