PayPal Gambling and Online Casinos

PayPal is one of the largest online payment processors on the planet. Now that online gambling is legal and regulated in multiple US states, a good number of the top online casinos, poker sites and sportsbooks in the country allow banking via PayPal. It’s popular, easy to use and simple to set up, making it a great option for depositing and withdrawing money at online gambling sites.

This page will cover the gambling sites that accept PayPal, plus look at the payment site’s history with online gambling in this country.

How to deposit with PayPal

Just make sure to use the same email address for your PayPal account that you used for your online casino account. Once you’re done, you’ll also want to make sure the online gambling site you want to deposit with accepts PayPal. Of course, you can just check to see if it’s on one of our lists below. Then, just follow these steps:

  1. Log in to your online casino account.
  2. Head over to the cashier page, click the deposit button and choose PayPal as your deposit method.
  3. Enter your PayPal email address and password as directed.
  4. Enter and confirm the amount you want to deposit.
  5. Confirm whether you want to deposit directly from your PayPal balance or your bank account linked to your PayPal account.

Do all that and your deposit should be available in your online casino account almost immediately.

Why don’t all online gambling sites accept PayPal?

PayPal’s terms and conditions clearly state that “account holders may not use PayPal to send or receive payments for any form of gambling activities, including but not limited to payments for wagers, gambling debts and gambling winnings, whether conducted online, in person or through any other means of communication,” unless the merchant has been approved by PayPal. PayPal only approves legal online casinos in the US that apply, which is why not every online casino in the US accepts PayPal for deposits and withdrawals.

PayPal only allows approved online gambling sites to use its service in US jurisdictions where online gambling is legal. To be approved, sites must demonstrate to PayPal’s satisfaction that they can block gambling activities from jurisdictions where online gambling is illegal.

Pros and cons of PayPal

PayPal has its advantages and disadvantages.

PayPal pros

  • Excellent security: PayPal employs encryption technology and adheres to the same security rules and regulations as US banks. This ensures your money is as safe with PayPal as it is just about anywhere.
  • A trusted brand: PayPal has been processing online payments since the 1990s.
  • As convenient as it gets: You can use PayPal just about anywhere online. The huge list of available merchants around the world and the ease with which you can transfer money from PayPal to your bank make it highly convenient.
  • Quick and reliable: PayPal transfers are quick, and errors are almost nonexistent.

PayPal cons

  • No business: If your PayPal account is a business account, you can’t use it to make deposits and withdrawals at online gambling sites. However, you can always open a separate personal account that you can use.
  • No cards: You’ll have to link your bank account and PayPal account because you can’t use credit cards to fund your PayPal account for the purposes of online gambling.
  • No withdrawals without deposits: You can’t use PayPal to make a withdrawal unless you also used PayPal to make a deposit.

PayPal’s entry into regulated online gambling

PayPal launched in the late 1990s, and online gambling sites were responsible for more transactions than almost any other merchants. However, in 2002, the US Attorney’s Office accused the company of processing payments for illegal gambling operators. PayPal paid a $10 million fine and introduced a worldwide no-gambling transaction policy.

The company stuck with its ban until some European countries began legalizing and regulating online gambling. In 2010, PayPal decided to start processing payments for legal online gambling sites in Europe.

Legal and regulated online gambling first came to the US through New Jersey in November 2013. Two years later, Caesars Interactive Entertainment became an approved PayPal merchant, and its online gambling sites began accepting PayPal. Two years after that, the sites operating under Golden Nugget Atlantic City’s internet gambling license also became approved PayPal merchants. PayPal’s list of approved online gambling sites has grown exponentially since then, and now includes online casinos in Pennsylvania, Michigan and West Virginia, as well as various legal online sportsbooks across the country.

Other options if a gambling site doesn’t accept PayPal

Fortunately, legal online gambling sites also allow you to use a variety of other deposit options outside of PayPal:

  • ACH/e-check: Online clearing house creates a link between your checking account and online casino account.
  • Debit/credit cards: Some debit and credit cards work at gambling sites with issuing bank approval.
  • Prepaid cards: Prepaid credit cards including the Play+ card.
  • PayNearMe: Retail payment processor takes cash at 7-Eleven, CVS and Family Dollar locations. See what online casinos accept PayNearMe.
  • Wire Transfer: Online and retail banking options available.
