Betting against the spread

If you’re going to bet NFL point spreads in Week 2 or any other NFL games this season here are a few tips that might help:

Pay attention to movement in the spread ahead of the game

The point spread lines posted above are just the opening odds. Things like injury and weather reports could force sportsbooks to change them ahead of the game. More money bet on one side or the other could do it as well. In such cases, sportsbooks adjust the line to attract more action to the opposite side and reduce exposure.

You can take advantage of this by taking more points or giving away fewer than what is really warranted. Movement in the line could hurt you too. So, try to anticipate it and lock in a bet early when you like the opening line.

Look for overreactions

It’s hard to judge a team based on one or two performances early in the season, but oddsmakers often do it. Look for spots where oddsmakers overreact to both good and bad early-season performances with big point spreads the next week. Most teams are often not as good or as bad as they look in Week 1.

Be selective in your betting

Just because there are up to 16 games on the NFL schedule in any given week doesn’t mean you have to bet against the spread on all of them. Be selective. Start by asking yourself why oddsmakers set a certain spread and look for games where they may have made a mistake. If one of the NFL point spreads seems spot on, it’s OK to pass on it. Other opportunities will present themselves.

Also, think about avoiding Pick ‘Em games where oddsmakers are basically telling you there isn’t much to choose between the two teams.

Here are a couple of games where you might be able to apply the NFL betting tips above:

Should the Patriots be huge road favorites this week?

The New England Patriots as 18.5-point favorites on the road against the Miami Dolphins might stick out like a sore thumb on the chart above, but perhaps it shouldn’t.

We’re talking about the defending Super Bowl Champions taking on a division rival many believe might be the worst team in football this year. Furthermore, the Patriots are coming off a 30-point drubbing of another AFC contender in the Pittsburgh Steelers. Plus, the Dolphins lost by an incredible 49 points to the Baltimore Ravens in Week 1.

If you think 18.5 points is too many to give up on the road, you might just want to avoid this game altogether. Despite the big number, it isn’t a typical overreaction to either side’s Week 1 performance. The Patriots are this good and Miami likely this bad.

If you really want to bet on the Patriots, the NFL futures market might be the better place to do it.

The champs spent most of the preseason at +700 to win it all. That looks like a dream price now as most have dropped that to +500 after a 30-point Week 1 win.

When it comes to NFL futures it is important to remember the more a team proves themselves to be true contenders, the lower the odds will drop. That means the price on most real Super Bowl contenders is better now than it is going to be.

Are oddsmakers overreacting to the Eagles?

The Philadelphia Eagles failed to cover the spread against the Washington Redskins on Sunday. They came back to win 32-27 after a slow start had them down 20-7 at the half. However, it wasn’t enough to cover a spread that had ballooned to as much as ten points before kickoff thanks to heavy Eagles betting.

This week Philadelphia will visit an Atlanta Falcons team that lost 28-12 to the Minnesota Vikings in Week 1. Atlanta didn’t look good, turning the ball over three times leading to three Vikings touchdowns.

Perhaps the game being in Atlanta is why Philadelphia this is a Pick ‘Em game or the Eagles are favored by just a point here. Perhaps it’s an overreaction to the Eagles slow start.

The Eagles are betting favorites in two of the three largest sports betting markets in the country in New Jersey and Pennsylvania. That means Eagles lines will move before game time as much as any this season.

In other words, those that like the Eagles straight up against the Falcons now should get in while they can. Because it’s more than likely they’ll be giving away three points or more before the week is through.
