It’s been a long wait for the Show Me State, but it finally showed up for sports betting.
Today marks the launch of Missouri sports betting after a years-long wait marked by legislative wrangling and an oh-so-close vote on a constitutional amendment to legalize sports wagering. With mobile and retail (in-person) betting now available for Missourians, here’s a quick guide to what you should know.

Mobile sports betting only works in Missouri – Here’s why
Sports betting regulations require Missouri bettors to be physically located in the state to open their app and place wagers. If you downloaded a sportsbook app and set it up while in Missouri but try to open it and place a bet while visiting family or friends in Kansas, for example, it won’t work.
Mastering sportsbook promos in Missouri
With all the top sportsbooks that launched today in Missouri, bettors have plenty of promotional offers to choose from. These range from “safety net” or “no-sweat” first bets that award a set amount of bonus bets if your first wager loses, to deposit matches that give you bonus bets equal to the amount you deposited, up to a certain limit. Navigating these offers requires close attention to detail. Keep the following in mind as you decide which ones to use:
Opt-in requirements
You usually have to opt in to a promotion when you make your deposit and/or first bet. You won’t receive the promo if you don’t select it during that process. As a rule of thumb, deposit matches typically require opting in when you make a deposit, and safety-net/no-sweat or first-bet promos require you to select the offer when making your first deposit or wager.
Odds requirements
In most cases, promos tied to your first bet require that wager to meet minimum odds to qualify. For example, a sportsbook may offer $300 in bonus bets when you make your first bet of $5 or more, but the wager must have odds of at least -500.
Bet requirements
Bonus offers linked to your first bet generally require a minimum wager amount, typically $5 or $10. Remember: You must opt in and meet the minimum requirement, or you won’t be eligible for any bonus bets.
Bet smart, gamble responsibly: How to stay in control
With so much excitement around Missouri’s launch, you may find yourself depositing and betting more than usual. To keep yourself in check, review responsible gaming best practices from the Missouri Gaming Association:
- Act intentionally: If you feel yourself losing control of how much you bet, step away from your sportsbook app and take a break.
- State of mind: Before you make a bet, remind yourself that sports wagering offers no guarantees, that it’s not a viable way to make a living, and that you should never bet money you can’t afford to lose.
- Know the game: Make sure you understand the rules and limitations of promotional offers and bet types when signing up for and using sportsbook apps.
