Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis has instigated an escalating series of red-meat political fights as he approaches a re-election campaign and perhaps a run for the Republican nomination for President of the United States.
Some of those Conservative, resume-building big reaches have been smacked back by courts.
Such was the case with the 2021 gambling compact with the Seminole Tribe of Florida that DeSantis quarterbacked, but was eventually invalidated by a US District Court judge as extra-legal.
Now comes the battle with one of Florida’s largest employers, entertainment and political juggernaut Walt Disney Corp.
When the company vowed to help repeal Florida’s controversial “Don’t Say Gay” bill, DeSantis fumed, then acted. This week the Florida Legislature passed a bill to take away the company’s special tax status.
Powerful forces are storming the Magic Kingdom. This portends to be a lengthy, messy and fascinating ordeal between two powerful entities that reach into a myriad of Florida issues.
Among them is the state of legalized gambling in the state of nearly 22 million.
So, culture wars aside, who should Florida gamblers be rooting for as the archers take their positions on the battlements of Cinderella Castle?
