A recent NBA gambling scandal has led to over 30 arrests and significant financial losses, raising pressing concerns about gambling addiction.

Some organizations are stepping up to provide essential responsible gambling resources to help those affected by gambling-related issues.

The controversy involves allegations of extensive multi-million-dollar schemes that include ties to organized crime, prompting experts to highlight the risks associated with both illegal and legal gambling.

Help is available to gamblers in need

Marcia Goodman-Hinnershitz, director of planning and resource development at the Council on Chemical Abuse in Reading, PA, pointed out that gambling has become normalized in media, increasing participation but also the potential for addiction.

Experts warn that the prevalence of gambling can lead to hidden addictions, with individuals often unaware of their problems until they face severe consequences.

Goodman-Hinnershitz emphasized the hidden dangers of compulsive gambling, including mental health deterioration and increased risks of depression and suicide. The urgency for help is reflected in her advice to reach out to resources like 1-800-GAMBLER if you suspect someone may be struggling.

The Council on Chemical Abuse offers multiple programs aimed at prevention, including a program specifically targeted at educating teenagers about the risks of online gambling. As awareness and education efforts ramp up, the hope is to mitigate the impact of problem gambling and provide necessary support to those affected.
