Over the past five years, the US online casino market has grown to seven states, including gaming heavyweights Michigan, New Jersey, and Pennsylvania.
That growth has brought considerable revenue to the seven states offering iGaming. It’s also led to traditional land-based games such as blackjack to amass a bigger following.
The popularity of online blackjack has led to several nuances in the way the game is played.
To get a better understanding of how online blackjack is changing the game, we spoke with Scott Morrow, gaming lecturer at the Harrah College of Hospitality at the University of Nevada-Las Vegas.
How do the odds for online blackjack differ from retail, and why?
“Online blackjack odds are generally similar to brick-and-mortar casinos, with house edges typically ranging from 0.5% to 3%, depending on rules and strategy. However, online games may offer slightly better odds due to lower overhead costs, allowing for more favorable rules such as standing soft 17, 3 to 2 Blackjack vs 6 to 5, or fewer decks.
“Differences arise from variations in game rules, software algorithms, or promotional bonuses online, which physical casinos cannot match due to operational constraints. Remember, blackjack is a skill-based game.”
What impact do odds have on players, and how do they benefit the house?
“The odds determine the player’s expected return over time. A lower house edge, like 1%, means players lose less in the long run, while a higher edge benefits the house by increasing its profit margin. Favorable odds attract players, but the house always maintains a statistical advantage, ensuring long-term profitability.”
Has online blackjack affected brick-and-mortar blackjack?
“Yes, online blackjack has reduced foot traffic to brick-and-mortar casinos, as players are drawn to the convenience of online platforms, especially in Atlantic City, NJ. However, physical casinos maintain appeal through social experiences, interacting with a live dealer, and amenities that online platforms cannot replicate.”
What are the main benefits of online blackjack for players and operators?
“For players, the top benefit is convenience, playing anytime, anywhere, with access to bonuses and varied game options. For online operators, it’s lower operational costs, enabling higher scalability and profitability without physical infrastructure.”
What are the main drawbacks of online blackjack for players and operators?
“For players, the main drawback is the lack of social interaction and potential concerns over game fairness due to reliance on software. For operators, it’s the challenge of regulatory compliance across jurisdictions and the risk of fraud or cybersecurity threats.
“In my opinion, the risks of problem gambling are exponentially increased in the online space. Having the ability to engage your phone 24/7 is just very alarming to me. The online space must put proactive responsible gaming controls on its platforms before the federal government takes serious action.”
