State of Play’s TL;DR
- September brought a fresh round of sweepstakes casino closures and expanded state restrictions.
- Some players are now facing redemption deadlines tied to platform shutdowns.
September turned into a rough month for the US sweepstakes casino sector, with multiple operators shutting down and others expanding their restricted-state lists.
For players, the biggest immediate issue is practical: some account balances now come with firm redemption deadlines.
Deadspin reported that LuckyLand Slots ceased operations on Sept. 14 after parent company VGW reached an $8 million settlement with New York regulators. CoinFrenzy also stopped operating last month, though no detailed public explanation was cited in the report.
Meanwhile, The Win Zone, operated by Playstudios, halted purchases on Sept. 22 and ended gameplay shortly afterward.
Closures piled up across the sweepstakes sector
The Win Zone’s exit came after Playstudios disclosed an impairment charge of between $3 million and $3.5 million tied to the business. Deadspin described September as one of the most turbulent months the US sweepstakes casino industry has faced, combining outright shutdowns with a broader pullback in market access.
LuckyLand Slots was the highest-profile closure because of its link to the New York settlement. But it was not the only operator to leave the market. CoinFrenzy’s shutdown and The Win Zone’s wind-down added to the sense that operators are reassessing where and how they can continue offering sweepstakes products.
More operators restricted access in additional states
The report also said several sweepstakes casinos expanded their lists of restricted states. Scrooge Casino and Lucky Rush added Indiana, Maine, and Oklahoma to their restricted-state lists. Jefebet restricted both Maine and Iowa, reversing an earlier decision that had allowed players in Iowa to participate.
Deadspin also reported that Sixty6 and Sweeps Jungle expanded restrictions to additional states, though the specific states were not identified in the report.
For former Win Zone users, the most concrete deadline is Oct. 23. According to the report, players have until then to redeem eligible Sweeps Coin balances before any remaining funds are forfeited.
