US online casinos generated a combined $1.03 billion in revenue in May, the third-best month on record for the industry, trailing only March 2026 and December 2025.
It was the third time the sector had cleared $1 billion in a single month, and the fifth time in six months it had come close, powered largely by record performances in states like New Jersey.

US online casinos cross the billion-dollar mark, again
The industry first crossed $1 billion in December 2025, posting $1.04 billion. March 2026 then set a new all-time high of $1.06 billion, according to Yardbarker, helping push first-quarter revenue past $3 billion for the first time in industry history.
May’s $1.03 billion built on that momentum, though year-over-year growth has now cooled to under 15% for two straight months.

New Jersey online casinos posted an all-time monthly high, up 11.9% year over year.
Michigan online casinos market grew even faster: the Michigan Gaming Control Board reported $305.8 million in May iGaming receipts, a jump of more than 24% from a year earlier.
Smaller markets grew fastest of all — West Virginia rose 32.1% to $39.5 million, and Rhode Island grew 36% to roughly $6.6 million.
Gamification, cross-selling and live dealers fuel the surge
A mix of product and platform strategies is behind the gains:
- Gamification and retention tools. Community jackpots, leaderboards and achievements add a layer of engagement beyond the games themselves, while loyalty rewards redeemable for perks like hotel stays keep players active.
- Cross-selling from sportsbooks. Operators that run casino and sports betting on one platform can shift sports bettors into casino games at little added marketing cost, particularly during slower sports stretches.
- Branded games. Games tied to popular TV shows, movies, and music draw in casual players already familiar with the themes.
- Live dealer games. Real-time dealers make the experience feel more immersive and more trustworthy than computer-generated outcomes, a factor credited with pulling players from retail casinos to online platforms.
Why the growth streak likely isn’t over
Monthly revenue could dip below $1 billion again before climbing back, as it did earlier this year. But the underlying trend favors continued growth: smaller markets are expanding quickly, and Maine will be the eighth legal online casino state, adding another source of revenue as more states weigh legalization.
