If Pennsylvanians were taking a leisurely approach to their summer in 2024, that lackadaisical approach didn’t apply to playing with the state’s regulated online casinos. Licensees in that space just had one of their best months ever.

In fact, August 2024 now stands as the second-most lucrative month for those online casino licensees in terms of win. In that regard, it looks like Pennsylvanians have done anything but take a vacation from their favorite apps in the summer of 2024.

Online casino win rises with the temps in Pennsylvania

According to the latest update from the Pennsylvania Gaming Control Board (PGCB), online casinos compiled almost $179.6 million in gross win from play on online slots and another $45.4 million worth of adjusted revenue from online poker and online table games during August 2024.

From that activity, the state and municipalities within stand to collect almost $79.2 million in assessments on that gaming according to the PGCB. Most of that comes from the online slot win, as Pennsylvania imposes a 34% rate on that vertical.

If you add the online slot win and poker/table games revenue, the total is just south of $225 million. Using that equation, August’s total is short of only the same sum from March 2024, which was more than $233.1 million.

August also now represents the sixth time in the past seven months that this combination has surpassed the $200 million mark in Pennsylvania. The sum for August 2024 is also an improvement of 23.6% compared to August 2023’s $171.9 million.

A strong start to the current fiscal year for Pennsylvania online casinos slowed a bit in August, but it’s still a remarkable uptick.

Current fiscal year could obliterate past performances

Now two months in, the 2024-25 fiscal year for regulated online casino play in Pennsylvania could not only set a new record, it could smash the old standard.

After July 2024’s numbers began the term up 27.1%, August’s year-over-year improvement failed to keep that pace. However, the running total is still 25.3% better than the combination of August and July of 2023.

Growth of over a quarter could be difficult to sustain over the final 10 months of FY2024-25. However, if the final numbers look anything similar to the current comparison, the market for online casino play in Pennsylvania could strengthen its case as the strongest in the nation.
