Iowa’s December Gaming Revenue Up From 2022 And November 2023

According to the IRGC’s latest report, Iowa players won $156.04M in December, with a revenue figure showing yearly and monthly progress.

According to the Iowa Racing and Gaming Commission (IRGC) latest report, Iowa casinos generated nearly $156.04 million in adjusted gross revenue. That revenue comes from poker, slot machines and table games.

It also includes physical sportsbooks inside Iowa casinos. As usual, slot machines were the biggest revenue generators for all the casinos in the state.

Throughout December, Iowa generated over $30 million in state taxes.

As mentioned, Iowa’s 19 brick-and-mortar casinos won $156.04 million from players in December. Iowa’s December gaming revenue is a 9.52% year-over-year increase from the $142.48 million generated in December 2022.

The figure also represents a 14.43% month-over-month growth.

Iowa casinos collected most of the money from slot machines. To be more precise:

  • Slot machine revenue: $140,581,326 (up 9.87% yearly and 14.89% monthly)
  • Table game revenue: $15,457,625 (up 6.42% yearly and 10.45% monthly)

The commission reported over 1.47 million admissions on 439 combined table games and 14,362 slot machines.

Prairie Meadows Racetrack and Casino continues to dominate Iowa gambling

As per IRGC’s December gaming report, the top five out of 19 Iowa brick-and-mortar casinos for slots and table game revenue were:

  1. Prairie Meadows Racetrack and Casino: $22,163,781
  2. Ameristar II: $17,435,237
  3. Horseshoe Casino Council Bluffs: $16,514,937
  4. Riverside Casino and Golf Resort: $11,285,843
  5. Rhythm City Casino: $10,334,347

Iowa sports betting revenue in December shows 86% monthly growth

In December, Iowa player spending (also known as a betting handle or total bets) was $282.72 million. Of that total:

  • $258.29 million was spent through online sports betting
  • $24.44 million came from Iowa retail sportsbooks

With the busy sports schedule featuring various NFL, NBA, and NHL wagering options, high betting handle and revenue results don’t come as a surprise.

Iowa’s December betting handle is nearly a 23% annual increase but a 2.41% decrease from the November 2023 sports betting handle of $289.70 million.

Meanwhile, Iowa sportsbooks collected $26.25 million in revenue in December 2023, with:

  • $23.56 million coming through online sports betting
  • $2.69 million coming from retail betting

December revenue figure is almost a 29% annual increase and an impressive 86.30% monthly progress from November’s $14.01 million.
