Most of the country’s casinos struggled to match their June revenue numbers. Not Massachusetts.
The latest data from the Massachusetts Gaming Commission (MGC) reveals that the state’s three casinos combined for $99.5 million in July, up 3.5% over June.
Key takeaways
- Could Massachusetts online casinos be coming in 2025? It would make it the eighth state to offer iGaming.
- Land-based casino revenue topped $99 million for the first time since March.
- Monthly revenue grew at its highest rate since March.
Massachusetts online casinos could be a reality in 2025
A discussion of casino revenue isn’t complete without mentioning online casinos. In an ideal gaming world, states would offer online casino gaming and sportsbooks.
However, just seven states have legal iGaming and Massachusetts isn’t one of them.
That may change in 2025, though. Rep. David Muradian said he plans on filing a bill in January that calls for legal online casinos. Muradian is optimistic his bill could pass. Why? The state recently legalized online lottery sales, paving the way for online casinos.
However, it may not be easy (it rarely is for online casinos). The lottery might push back, saying online casinos will cut into its revenue, which would reduce the amount of money it sends to various causes like early childhood education.
Let’s say, though, that online casino proponents allay the lottery’s fears and online casinos go live in Massachusetts in 2025. How much revenue could iGaming generate? More than $80 million in an average month, according to PlayUSA’s analysis of June iGaming revenue and state population:
