Maryland Lottery and Gaming Control Agency confirmed it signed a licensing agreement with gaming provider International Gaming Technology (IGT). As a result, in May, the gaming provider will launch its Cash Pop draw-based game in Maryland.

“The Maryland Lottery is always excited to launch new draw games, and IGT’s Cash Pop will be a novel addition to our portfolio,” said Director of Product Development for the Maryland Lottery and Gaming Control Agency Kate Airey in an IGT press release.

What to expect from IGT’s Cash Pop online lottery game

IGT’s online game, Cash Pop provides players with generous time to plan their strategies and craft a personalized gaming experience with each play. According to reports, Maryland’s launch will feature four daily draws offering a range of prize values, spanning from $1 to $10.

On how to play, Marylanders will have the freedom to gamble on one or more numbers between 1 and 15. After making their selections, players can then choose their preferred wager amount, which can be $1, $2, $5, or $10 for each selected number.

With Cash Pop, players have a variety of options, including the ability to decide on the number of consecutive games they wish to play. Airey continued:

“We’re confident that the 1 in 15 odds of winning a single ‘Pop’ will resonate with our existing players, and the gameplay is easy to understand, which will help us engage a new generation of players.”

Once the wager is placed, the terminal randomly assigns the potential prize value for each matched number, creating an intriguing “two games in one” dynamic. Lotteries have the flexibility to adjust the frequency of draws to suit their requirements, but each draw always involves a single number selection from 1 to 15.

Cash Pop is a revenue giant for IGT and state lotteries

Cash Pop has demonstrated its effectiveness as a revenue generator, boasting average weekly per capita sales of $0.10 across the United States during the first quarter of 2023.

IGT Chief Operating Officer, Global Lottery, Jay Gendron, mentioned that the licensing agreement is an expansion initiative and promises substantial sales growth in Oyster State.

“This licensing agreement between the Maryland Lottery and IGT for our proprietary Cash Pop game builds upon our strong momentum, expanding the reach of this exciting game. Cash Pop has yielded significant sales in jurisdictions where it’s available, and we believe it will enhance Maryland Lottery’s draw game portfolio with its simplistic and flexible gameplay features that players readily embrace.”

Maryland stands out as an excellent choice for IGT’s expansion efforts, as evidenced by the state’s notable increase in MD sports betting revenue in January 2024. It also indicates promising prospects for the state’s gaming industry in the coming year.

With $80 million in gross revenue, Maryland experienced its second-best financial performance since its inception, largely attributed to the excitement surrounding the NFL playoffs.

Despite maintaining its agreement with the Maryland Lottery, IGT also remains committed to various other lottery commissions across the United States. Which includes its extended seven-year agreement with the California Lottery.

Additionally, in late January, IGT secured a three-year contract extension with the Virginia Lottery. Under this agreement, IGT will provide the lottery with over 5,000 lottery terminals and its retailer Pro S2 machines.

While IGT stands to benefit from Maryland’s flourishing gaming landscape, the state will also gain from IGT’s advanced technologies, which have proven valuable to other state lotteries. Thus, fostering mutually beneficial partnerships.
