After enjoying a hot streak to end the winter, Massachusetts casino revenue has cooled.

For the second straight month, Encore Boston Harbor, MGM Springfield, and Plainridge Park Casino couldn’t crack the $100 million mark. The trio combined for $97,989,042 in May revenue, up 0.5% compared to April 2024 gaming revenue in MA, but down 0.7% compared to May 2023.

Key takeaways

  • MA online casinos aren’t legal but could generate more than $100 million a month in revenue.
  • Casino revenue was up slightly month-on-month and down slightly year-on-year.
  • Plainridge Park had its second-highest revenue total since May 2023.

Millions of revenue dollar from Massachusetts online casinos await

Though the Northeast is a hotbed for online casinos—Connecticut, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, and Rhode Island have iGaming. However, Massachusetts isn’t a part of that group.

Online casino revenue presents massive revenue opportunities for iGaming operators and state budgets. However, Massachusetts has yet to embrace those opportunities. Generally speaking, the state was slow to adopt online sports betting, debuting in March 2023.

While legal online sports wagering typically paves the way for online casinos, mobile sports betting’s slow genesis in the Bay State means it could take lawmakers considerable time to pave the regulatory road to online casinos.

If they do get the work done, revenue could be considerable based on averages from the seven states offering online casinos in April.

Plainridge Park has second-best month in the past year

According to data from the Massachusetts Gaming Commission, May’s revenue of $97,989,042 represented a leveling off of monthly and yearly numbers—the changes were less than a single percentage point for both months.

None of the state’s three casinos saw win variations of more than $600,000:

  • Encore Boston Harbor: Up $285,587
  • MGM Springfield: Down $348,558
  • Plainridge Park: Up $553,366

However, amid all the tepid growth, Plainridge Park eclipsed $14 million in revenue for only the second time since May 2023.
