State of Play’s TL;DR
- The Catawba Nation says it wants to build two more casinos in North Carolina.
- The announcement came during a ribbon-cutting ceremony for the first phase of the Catawba Two Kings Casino Resort.
Catawba Nation Chief Brian Harris said the tribe plans to build two more casinos in North Carolina during the opening celebration for the first phase of the Catawba Two Kings Casino Resort.
Harris said the tribe has already identified potential locations for the casinos, but he declined to name them.
“It’s all about negotiations. We’ve identified the locations. We’re in preliminary negotiations right now. And once those come to fruition, when we come to deal, we’ll make an announcement.”
The Kings Mountain project remains the tribe’s biggest active development. Its first operational phase includes a 24/7 casino with 1,350 slot machines, 22 traditional table games, and 36 electronic table games. The initial setup also features a 68-seat restaurant, an 18-seat bar, sports betting kiosks, a player rewards area, and roughly 500,000 square feet of space, including parts of a multi-level parking structure.
Two Kings complex on 2.2 million acres
More brick-and-mortar casino development in North Carolina could reshape where regional customers choose to play, especially as the Catawba Nation builds out a larger destination about 35 miles west of Charlotte near Interstate 85 and Crowders Mountain.
The Kings Mountain resort is valued at roughly $1.2 billion to $1.25 billion and is expected, once complete, to include about 4,300 slot machines, 100 live table games, 11 restaurants, 11 bars, and a 24-story hotel with 385 rooms. The full property is projected to span about 2.2 million square feet and support around 2,200 permanent jobs.
Employment already stands at about 800 workers, according to Trent Troxel, who oversees casino operations.
The Kings Mountain project continues toward a targeted full completion in spring 2027.
