Interest in live roulette is climbing across North America, but the way players approach the game suggests that chance is only part of the story.
New research from Hard Rock Bet indicates that many players continue to move toward familiar numbers, established betting patterns, and even long-held superstitions when placing their wagers.
The operator’s latest report combines millions of betting records with online search data to examine how players interact with roulette. The findings suggest that while the game remains entirely random, player behavior often follows recognizable trends.
From the popularity of specific numbers to the betting strategies players favor most, the study offers a closer look at how roulette enthusiasts approach one of the casino industry’s oldest table games.
Search interest points to growing curiosity
According to Hard Rock Bet, Google searches for live roulette have increased by 60% over the past three months. That rise prompted the operator to analyze more than 30.5 million roulette bets placed by over 32,000 players between April and June.
The betting data came from Evolution’s live dealer and RNG American roulette games available through Hard Rock Bet Online Casino in Michigan and New Jersey. Alongside gameplay statistics, the report examined more than 300 roulette-related Google search queries to better understand what players want to learn before placing bets.
Rather than focusing only on wagering activity, the report compared betting behavior with online search trends. Together, those findings paint a broader picture of how interest in roulette continues to evolve across regulated North American markets.
Most players are still learning the basics
The search analysis suggests that many players are looking for fundamental information before exploring advanced strategies.
In Michigan, 42% of live roulette-related searches focused on the rules of the game. Searches about betting options and payouts accounted for another 33%, while strategy-related searches represented 14%.
New Jersey showed nearly identical behavior. Around 43% of searches centered on learning the rules, while 31% involved bets and payouts. Strategy-related topics accounted for 15% of searches.
Pennsylvania had a similar pattern. Nearly half of all roulette searches, or 46%, related to understanding the game’s rules. Searches covering betting strategies represented 14%, while bets and payouts made up 30%.
Ontario displayed a slightly different balance. Although 41% of searches still focused on the rules, interest in strategy climbed to 18%. That was the highest proportion among the jurisdictions included in the report. Bets and payouts accounted for 29% of roulette-related searches.
Taken together, the figures suggest that understanding how roulette works remains a higher priority than studying complex betting systems.
Zero is America’s most popular roulette number
Hard Rock Bet also examined straight-up bets to identify which numbers players selected most often.
The analysis found that 0 was the most popular choice. Players placed 797,088 straight-up wagers on the green number, representing 3.22% of all bets in that category. Number 11 ranked second, followed by 23, 7, and 17. Each attracted more than 715,000 straight-up bets during the study period.
At the opposite end of the rankings, 00 proved the least popular number. It received 421,409 straight-up bets and accounted for 1.70% of all wagers on individual numbers. The report also found that odd numbers appeared more frequently among the 10 most popular selections. Only three even numbers reached the top 10.
Meanwhile, number 13 ranked among the fifteen least popular numbers. Hard Rock Bet suggested that long-standing beliefs surrounding unlucky numbers may influence some betting decisions, although roulette outcomes remain entirely random.
The popularity of 0 may also reflect player perceptions. As one of the wheel’s two green pockets in American roulette, the number has often been associated with luck in popular culture.
Betting patterns remain consistent across wager types
The report found that players often maintained the same preferences regardless of the betting category they selected. Among red numbers, 23 ranked as the most popular choice. On black, number 11 attracted the most wagers. The least popular red number was 34, while number 6 ranked lowest among black numbers.
The same trends appeared in odd and even betting. Zero emerged as the most popular even number, while 7 led all odd-number selections. When players chose numbers between 1 and 18, number 11 received the most support. Among high numbers from 19 through 36, number 23 topped the rankings.
The dozen bets produced similar results. Number 11 proved most popular in the first dozen, while 17 led the second dozen and 23 ranked first in the third dozen. Conversely, players generally avoided number 6 in the first dozen, number 13 in the second dozen, and number 34 in the third dozen.
According to the report, these recurring patterns suggest that players often carry their preferred numbers across different wagering formats rather than selecting them at random.
Straight-up bets dominate roulette strategy
Beyond favorite numbers, the report also examined which betting strategies players used most frequently.
Straight-up bets accounted for more than 24.7 million wagers, representing 81.5% of all categorized bets. That made betting on a single number by far the most common approach among players. Split bets ranked second with nearly 2.9 million wagers. Corner bets followed in third place with more than 1.1 million wagers.
Although straight-up bets were the most popular, they were not associated with the largest average stake. Instead, even-money wagers such as red or black, odd or even, and high or low produced the highest average bet size at $21.10.
Straight-up wagers averaged between $5 and $7, reflecting the higher risk associated with betting on a single number despite the larger potential payout of 35 to 1. Overall, the report found that average wager sizes generally declined as the potential payout odds increased.
Superstition still appears to influence player choices
While roulette outcomes are determined entirely by chance, the findings suggest that personal beliefs continue to shape betting decisions.
Numbers commonly regarded as lucky, including 7 and 11, consistently ranked among players’ favorites throughout the report. Conversely, number 13 appeared near the bottom of several rankings, reflecting the enduring influence of one of gambling’s oldest superstitions.
The report does not conclude that superstition determines every betting decision. Instead, it suggests that cultural beliefs, personal habits, and familiarity may all contribute to how players select their wagers. Those preferences remained visible across millions of bets, even though each spin of the roulette wheel remains statistically independent from the last.
Study highlights behavior rather than outcomes
According to a news article published by Hard Rock Bet, the report examines player behavior instead of identifying winning strategies.
Roulette remains a game of chance, and no betting pattern changes the mathematical probabilities built into the game. Instead, the research offers insight into how players approach roulette as interest in live dealer casino games continues to grow across regulated markets.
The methodology analyzed more than 30.5 million bets placed by over 32,000 players during April, May, and June. It also reviewed more than 300 Google search terms related to roulette, grouping them into categories covering rules, betting options, strategies, game variants, and payouts.
Together, those findings suggest that while roulette players continue searching for ways to improve their understanding of the game, many still rely on familiar numbers and personal preferences whenever the wheel begins to spin.
