Getting to know Blaise Bourgeois

Blaise Bourgeois excels in sports, poker, and the numbers involved. After an award-winning soccer career and receiving his Master’s in Sport Management from St. John’s University, Blaise was immediately picked up by NBC to cover the Summer Olympics and the English PremierLeague.

Blaise left his stint at NBC to move to the front office of a professional soccer club, becoming their Director of Communications. He then left to pursue an opportunity as an Editor for OneFootball, where he stayed for nearly five years and wrote nearly 20,000 articles while OneFootball became one of the world’s biggest soccer apps.

During the COVID-19 pandemic, Blaise found poker again and began to take the game seriously. During his first trip to Las Vegas, he was referred to PokerNews, spending that summer covering the World Series of Poker and cashing the only two events he played.

After trips to Barcelona and Cyprus, Blaise left PokerNews for Catena Media. In the years since, Blaise has risen professionally as a Lead Poker Editor, a Senior Staff Writer, commentator, and an independent poker journalist.

In the last 12 months, Blaise has started his own publication, Range Advantage, which has become one of the world’s fastest-growing poker Substacks.

Blaise looks at poker from every angle: strategy, live tournament experiences, industry news, player stories, hand analysis, and the realities of trying to improve and compete in the game. Some posts are technical: breaking down hands, looking at solver outputs, and thinking through spots where theory and real-world decision-making don’t always line up perfectly. Other posts are more journalistic or personal stories from poker rooms and tournament stops, observations about the industry, interviews, and thoughts on what it actually feels like to spend time playing and covering poker around the world.

As a player, Blaise Bourgeois has won nearly $1M in combined live and online poker winnings, taking home a WSOP Circuit Ring in 2024 to add to his extensive trophy collection.

Q&A With Blaise Bourgeois

Not many profitable poker players still want to spend their time working, so it’s become a responsibility to represent poker players as a whole and discuss major issues that don’t usually get covered in mainstream publications.

I’m also an award-winning research statistician, so if there are numbers involved and/or serious digging required, I’m extremely motivated to find answers.

I’m usually finding the nearest beach, hammock, or spending quality time with my girlfriend, who is also a professional poker player. We spend a lot of time on poker solvers. I also love watching older movies and finding phenomenal restaurants.

Readers should expect a lot more research than your average casino writer, with exceptional attention to detail. I’m a huge numbers guy, so I ensure every key statistic is always included and verified for accuracy. You’ll also get someone who is adding his player perspective.

As an investigative journalist, my finger is always on the pulse of the latest news from the poker industry. There’s a lot of crossover between poker and gambling in terms of trends and legal changes, so I’m usually one of the first to know. I have plenty of experience covering breaking news across the poker and gambling industries, so I know exactly where to look and who to talk to whenever something happens.
